Lizzo captured attention, both for her music, her friends, and how she has refused to conform to current body standards. Fans frequently applaud her attitude, proudly boasting about she lives life unapologetically. It turns out that Lizzo isn’t crazy about the word unapologetic. Here’s why Lizzo doesn’t want you referring to her as so.

Lizzo’s thoughts on being unapologetic

When most fans say that Lizzo is unapologetic, they mean it as a compliment. They love how she embraces both her inner and outer self and doesn’t care what her critics have to say.

While it’s likely that Lizzo admires the sentiment, the word, unapologetic, bothers her. She feels there is a troubling undertone to the word that sends the wrong message.

In a 2019 interview for Essence, Lizzo explained why she doesn’t care to be thought of as unapologetic.

“I made a decision to be myself because I knew I had no choice,” said the talented rapper. “Sometimes the label ‘unapologetic’ bothers me because it can be loaded, because it means we have to apologize for something in the first place. I’m not ignorant to the fact that we had to have a demeanor of lowering ourselves culturally just to exist. But I’m trying to shake up the narrative about how we’re supposed to act.”

Many assume that Lizzo shot to fame. Many fans were first introduced to Lizzo in 2019 and fell hard for her vibrancy, cockiness, and music. While it seems like Lizzo was one of those stars who enjoyed a meteoric rise, she wasn’t.

She isn’t shy about sharing the fact that it took several long years on the road. During that time she frequently performed for thin crowds, faced harsh criticism, lived in her car, and struggled to stretch every single penny. Unlike some stars who like to pretend that the hard times never happened, Lizzo embraces the memories and admits that the days of living hand to foot helped shape her into both the musician and person she is today.

Instead of following in the footsteps of celebrities who gloss over the difficulties they faced by saying they always knew they’d make it, Lizzo admits that there were times when she considered throwing in the towel.
