Where Does Maddox Jolie-Pitt’s Relationship Stand With Brad Pitt?
Being the child of two iconic film stars is arguably one of the biggest life challenges in the world, especially when the parents are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It doesn’t help when the child also becomes estranged from an iconic father. Such is the case between Maddox Jolie-Pitt and Brad Pitt.
As sad as it is, Maddox hasn’t always had the best relationship with his dad. He was adopted by Jolie legally in 2002. Then Pitt did the same four years later when he and Jolie married.
Now, though, the jury’s out on whether father and son will grow closer, despite Maddox distancing himself.
Maddox Jolie-Pitt seems to want to carve his own identity
According to various media sources, Maddox now wants to remove public perception as being Pitt’s son. Anybody in his shoes likely would since Pitt stands alone in creating an iconic persona. Having to follow in his footsteps is all the more daunting when the media and the world is watching intently.
The good news is that with Maddox being from a different country, he won’t have to worry about being a carbon-copy of his father. Just imagine Pitt having a son looking just like him and how much of a burden that would be if deciding to go into the acting arena.
Maddox is reportedly close to his mom. This alone could help him get started in acting if he wanted it. Or, it’ll hopefully get him into doing more humanitarian work like Jolie is known for globally.
How did this deterioration of relations with Pitt begin for Maddox? One incident on a plane about four years ago seemed to throw everything off-kilter.
An infamous altercation between Maddox and Brad Pitt took place
Back in 2016, Pitt and Maddox apparently got into a fight while the entire family traveled on a private plane. Media reported at the time Pitt was drunk, got into a fight with Jolie, then things escalated between him and Maddox.
It’s this incident that became a point of contention in whether Pitt should gain custody of his kids during the Pitt-Jolie divorce. Much of this still doesn’t appear to be entirely worked out, despite reported supervision being done when the kids have visited Pitt during holidays.
Reportedly for Maddox, this fight on the plane was the final straw in getting along well with his dad. Even though Pitt’s camp denied any punches were thrown, it was dramatic enough where Maddox has reportedly refused to visit Pitt since the event occurred.
Pitt is still upset about how Maddox feels about him, though some hope they’ll be able to reconnect when the latter becomes an adult.
Where does Brad Pitt currently stand with his son?
Last year, it was reported that Jolie “has been trying to heal the rift between father and son.” A source revealed: “Maddox hasn’t been receptive [to them]. And for Brad, it’s a tremendous loss.”
A US Magazine report last year also cited a source that claims “Maddox doesn’t really see himself as Brad’s son.” A lot has changed since.
Recent reports say Pitt is “slowly” mending his relationship with his son. A source reportedly told In Touch that Pitt skipped the 2020 BAFTAs in London so he could spend time with Maddox.
“Brad fully intended to go to the BAFTAs,” the source explains. “But at the last minute, he learned that his son Maddox was back in L.A. from college. So Brad prioritized things and stayed in town to see him. And he’s glad he did.”
Weeks later, Pitt dedicated his Academy Award victory to his children, including Maddox. “This is for my kids. They color everything I do. I adore you,” Pitt said.
Backstage at the 2020 Oscars, Pitt said he supports his children pursuing their passions. “I want them to follow their bliss,” he said. “You know, follow their passions, whatever they’re most interested in. And then I think it’s about guiding as you can. But that they get to try everything on and find out where their passion lies. So, sure. Why not?”
