Why Matthew McConaughey Hasn’t Used Deodorant in Years
Matthew McConaughey has been a heartthrob since he broke out with 1993’s Dazed and Confused. A big part of his shtick is his natural and fresh-faced look. But what you might not know is how far he takes his lifestyle. You see, McConaughey apparently does not wear deodorant — and he hasn’t in years.
Matthew McConaughey is not a fan of deodorant
McConaughey told People magazine after it named him the “sexiest man alive” in 2005 that he never uses deodorant. “I haven’t worn deodorant in 20 years,” he shared.
“I don’t like to smell like someone or something else,” he added to People (via The Daily Express). “The women in my life, including my mother, have all said, ‘Hey, your natural smell smells, one, like a man, and, two, smells like you.”
He also told the magazine that he considers natural smells to be the “sexiest,” especially when it comes to women. “The way my woman smells when she wakes up in the morning, no perfume on. But I also love honeysuckle. You walk by and it hits you and you just look for the bees,” he continued.
But that’s not to say his personal hygiene is lacking
Even though he doesn’t use deodorant, McConaughey noted in the aforementioned interview that he still takes his beauty regimen seriously. He mentioned that he uses soap, brushes his teeth, and follows a strict hair care routine.
“[I use] Cetaphil soap. I have Sonicare toothbrushes because I always brush my teeth in the shower. Then I have shampoo, conditioner, and tea tree hair oil, just to give it some texture,” he shared. “I’ve been using Regenix, stuff for healthy hair to keep this hair strong because in the year 2000 some of this hair was falling out. ‘Not yet, baby!’”
He also said he makes his own face and body creams, even partnering with Kiehl’s in 2017 to launch a limited edition facial rub. Additionally, he told Marie Claire that he doesn’t mind wearing cologne every so often either. “I like to smell like myself, but I don’t mind a little scent. That’s what I like about Dolce & Gabbana The One. It’s masculine and classic, but still young,” he added.
Matthew McConaughey isn’t the only celebrity who doesn’t use deodorant
Aside from the Mud actor, several other celebrities have revealed that they also don’t like to wear deodorant.
Cameron Diaz once told E! News, “I don’t believe in antiperspirant. It’s really bad for you. I haven’t used it for almost 20 years. You’re stinky because you use antiperspirant. It keeps all the stink in.”
Her friend Bradley Cooper also isn’t a fan, but he told Esquire that he still stays on top of his personal hygiene. “I do take a lot of showers, so maybe that helps… [I take one] in the morning and then at night. And after I work out, I’ll take a shower. So maybe three a day,” he continued.
Other such as Tom Ford and Kourtney Kardashian have also shunned deodorant, according to Ranker. But at least they have found other ways to stay fresh.
