Why Meghan Markle Was Devastated and Crying Right Before Her Wedding to Prince Harry
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot on May 19, 2018, millions of people around the globe tuned in to see the royal wedding. For the lavish affair, which took place in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, Markle wore a Givenchy gown by British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller. She also donned a lovely bandeau diamond tiara previously worn by Queen Mary and was glowing when she said her vows.
But what fans didn’t know is that the bride was in tears just before her nuptials and her reason had Prince Harry and Prince William upset as well. Here’s why the former actress was crying and so devastated prior to her big day.
The reason Markle cried before her wedding
The reason Markle was so distressed had to do with her father, Thomas Markle Sr.
According to reports, the former Suits star and her husband-to-be were “sobbing” just days before they said “I do” as they pleaded with Markle’s dad about attending the wedding.
A wedding courtier who was at their rehearsal told The Sun, “They were both in tears at what was going on with Meghan’s father in America. Prince William was pretty upset as well.”
Fans may recall that leading up to the royal event it was uncertain if Markle Sr. would attend due to health concerns and following the news that he staged paparazzi photos of him prepping for the wedding.
In the pics, which were taken near his home in Rosarito, Mexico, he was seen getting fitted for a suit, reading up on British history, and looking at online stories about his daughter and the prince.
He later acknowledged the mistake and despite the scandal, the bride and groom were still hopeful that he would make the trip abroad to walk his daughter down the aisle. However, that didn’t happen and instead the now-duchess entered the chapel alone and met Prince Charles halfway down the aisle. He then took her arm and gave her away to his son.
The duchess and her dad don’t have a relationship today
These days the Duchess of Sussex and her father don’t have a relationship at all. Markle Sr.’s decision to continually speak to the media reportedly pushed the royal couple away and it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll meet his grandson, Archie Harrison, anytime soon.
In September, Markle Sr. spoke to the Daily Mail about his daughter and son-in-law’s choice not to communicate with him.
“Everyone raves about how gracious and wonderful they are, but they are not wonderful to their own family,” he said. “You can’t portray yourself as being charitable and bringing people together and then ghost your own father and your entire family.”
He added, “Their treatment of me has left a lot to be desired.”
