Megyn Kelly still has a busy schedule despite no longer being at the news desk at Fox or the Today Show. Married to author Doug Brunt since 2008, Kelly and her husband manage their busy careers and home life with three kids. Now hosting her own podcast, Kelly previously shared how her professional life helps enriches her parenting skills.

Megyn Kelly gave major props to stay-at-home moms

Kelly’s three kids – son Yates, 11, daughter Yardley, 9, and son Thatcher, 7 – are clearly a top priority in her life. While she loves doting on her children, Kelly admitted she found the idea of being a stay-at-home mom a bit daunting.

“I marvel at my friends who are full-time mothers,” the former Fox News star wrote in her 2016 book, Settle for More. “I don’t know how they do it. One of my closest friends is a stay-at-home mom. I think she has it harder, and she thinks I have it harder. She’s always remarking on how ‘present’ I am with my kids.”

The Today Show alum credited those parents that are home full-time with their children for their resilience and selflessness.

“To me, full-time caregiving is what’s truly amazing,” Kelly remarked. “If I were with my kids full-time, I couldn’t sustain that level of engagement. When Doug and I have the kids all day every day on vacation, I’m wiped out.”

How being a working mom energizes Megyn Kelly

Always ambitious in her career, Kelly realized early on that she was best suited to keep her job when she became a mother.

“If I were a stay-at-home mom, I like to think I could get to be as good as my friends, but it would take time,” she explained. “And patience. The truth is, I always knew that if I became a mom, I would be a working mother. I love that I can go out into the world, and then when I walk into that house, I’m full of excitement and energy.”

Kelly commented on how her children pick up on her enthusiasm for her work, giving them a positive mindset about future careers.

“The kids experience it by osmosis,” she wrote. “They see that I love my job. They understand that they can find a job someday they will really love. I hope they’re really learning that.”

Megyn Kelly and husband Doug Brunt support each other’s career endeavors

Another factor that Kelly pointed out as essential to balancing work and home life is having a husband who is equally committed to family.

“I also hope they’re learning that one of the best ways to make this work is to find a supportive spouse,” Kelly shared. “Neither Doug nor I came in with any strong biases about gender roles. When we got together, he made more money than I did. Now I make more, and probably that will cycle around many more times over the rest of our lives.”

When Brunt wanted to leave his job as CEO of a technology company to become a full-time writer, Kelly was all for it. Brunt is now a New York Times best-selling author, and the former Today star noted the positive example this set for their kids.

“It helps that we both now love what we do,” Kelly wrote. “Our kids see that Doug and I support each other’s goals.”
