Why Netflix Changed ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Rating to TV-MA
Netflix is turning things even more intense by changing The Umbrella Academy Season 3 rating to TV-MA. The Umbrella Academy comics by Gerard Way and Dark Horse Comics follow a sort of twisted X-Men team consisting of Luthor (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min), and Vanya (Elliot Page). After an intense season 2, Netflix plans to take the show in an even darker direction.
Netflix upped ‘The Umbrella Academy’ series rating from TV-14 to TV-MA ahead of season 3
The Umbrella Academy Netflix show never shied away from violence, language, heavy drug usage, or themes of death. However, season 1 and season 2 held a TV-14 age rating.
This meant that parents were “strongly cautioned” as the “program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age.”
Klaus alone could raise the rating as he copes with his powers through constant drug use. While the ghost of his brother Ben encouraged him to go clean, Klaus has a long way to full recovery.
However, after Netflix gave a first look and release date announcement for The Umbrella Academy Season 3, either those in charge of ratings reevaluated the series or something in new episodes really pushed the show’s limits to earn a TV-MA.
What does the Netflix rating change mean for ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3?
It sounds like the twisted X-Men-like series has some harsher content in store for season 3.
However, what exactly does it mean for the show? Could situations turn bloodier than Allison “blowing minds” in season 2? Could two Umbrella Academy characters hook up?
The Umbrella Academy Netflix page says “language, smoking” are the only things mentioned. At the very least, fans can expect harsher language in the new season. The Umbrella Academy Season 3 rating info would reflect increased nudity or violence.
According to the TV parental Guidelines, TV-MA cautions “crude indecent language (L), explicit sexual activity (S), or graphic violence (V).” This means Netflix now considers the show unsuitable for children under 17.
The new episodes are not following the comics Volume 3 ‘Hotel Oblivion,’ making predictions harder
As fans try to speculate what the new Umbrella Academy Season 3 rating change means, they cannot rely on content found in the Dark Horse Comics volume 3, “Hotel Oblivion.”
“I am very close with Gerard and Gabriel, so I pitch them the season before I do it, let them know what I’m doing,” showrunner Steve Blackman told ComicBook.com. “They’re very kind, and they’re pitching me where they’re going in the next volumes, and you know, the two mediums are sort of crossing over now.”
Black continued saying that they work together for the comics and the show to stay on the same path. However, what remains the same and what changes remains murky for fans.
“Sometimes they’re looking at something I do and say, ‘We should put that in the graphic novel,’ and they’re saying, ‘well, why don’t you do this in the show,'” Black said. “We accept they’re sort of different things, but we love any times we can find these crossovers. But I have a good sense of where they’re going. I have an idea of where I want to go, and we’re sort of working together to get to that happy place.”
Fans can watch the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy Season 3 on June 22, 2022.
