Why Pam Dawber Chose to Return to TV for ‘The Crazy Ones’
Years ago, before Pam Dawber and Mark Harmon settled down together, both actors were in the spotlight. Mark Harmon was taking center stage in productions starring alongside the likes of Sean Connery, Liz Taylor, and Robert DuVall. And Pam Dawber, famous for acting across from Robin Williams in Mork & Mindy had also begun appearing in a handful of films. Dawber starred in Stay Tuned with John Ritter, I’ll Remember April, and Remembrance of Love with Kirk Douglas.
Though Pam Dawber made a name for herself in Hollywood – in major TV shows, cinematic productions, and made-for-TV movies — she stepped out of the spotlight to raise her family years down the line. Since then, she has remained out of the public eye. However, now that her children have grown, she has taken on a few different roles — often small but memorable — in more recent works. So, what made Dawber return to TV once more in 2014 for The Crazy Ones? What about the part brought her back in front of the camera?
All about ‘The Crazy Ones’: The 1-season sitcom
The Crazy Ones was a 1-season sitcom starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar, as well as James Wolk, Amanda Setton, and Hamish Linklater. The show followed Simon Roberts — an unorthodox genius with a big personality, who happens to head an advertising agency. The advertising agency boasts some of the world’s largest (and most significant) clients out there. Simon keeps his daughter, Sydney, who is also his partner, right by his side.
While Syndey is ambitious, motivated, and intelligent, she spends a bit too much time babysitting her dad (at least in her opinion). The two work alongside a diverse group of individuals — from a handsome charmer to a wacky art director — who have the skills needed to soar, despite some weird quirks.
So, what about The Crazy Ones did it for Pam Dawber? Let’s just say, after making beautiful memories with Robin Williams year before, it had less to do with the show, and more to do with the man leading it.
Pam Dawber talks about ‘The Crazy Ones’ and her on-screen reunion with Robin Williams
As ETOnline notes, Dawber let Robin Williams convince her to appear alongside him in The Crazy Ones — satisfying all the Mork & Mindy fans out there. As for why she wanted to star in the show, she stated:
I hadn’t seen Robin for 20 years…I did that episode because I wanted to be with Robin. I wanted to see Robin. That was a gift. That was such a gift.

Now that her children are older, Dawber makes occasional TV appearances and she definitely enjoyed appearing on the screen once more for The Crazy Ones. Yet, as ETOnline notes, she firmly believes that it’s hard for a marriage (especially with young children at home) to work when both parents are in showbusiness.
Dawber stated, “I don’t think two people can work all the time in show business and stay married.” Here’s to hoping Pam Dawber continues to take on fun characters in various TV shows; she’s a talented actress whose gift — especially for comedic timing — should not go to waste.
