Why Priyanka Chopra’s Grandmother Didn’t Think Anyone Would Marry Her
Priyanka Chopra has done what many told her wasn’t possible: transitioning from Bollywood to Hollywood. After winning second place in Miss India in, then going on to win Miss World in 2000 and filming over 50 Bollywood films over the years, she landed the lead role in ABC’s Quantico that ran from 2015 to 2018.
She is now among the A-List Hollywood elite and is slated to be in the new Matrix film alongside the trilogy’s stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Not only is her acting career rising to epic proportions, but she’s become close with royalty, literally and figuratively thanks to her friendship with Meghan Markle, and her marriage to pop royal, Nick Jonas. It was a long road to meeting the man of her dreams, and it was a day that some thought might never come, but the two are happily married now, and all despite their age difference and the couple’s limited skills in the kitchen.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have a truly modern love story
Chopra and Jonas had a distinctly modern-day meet-cute. That is, they first “met” via social media.
Jonas had been watching Quantico and texted a friend of his on the show about her. Soon after he stepped out on a limb and tweeted her: “I’m hearing from a few mutual friends that we should meet.” This was in September of 2016.
The two began texting back and forth until they were able to meet in person. In 2017, one of their early “dates” involved Chopra inviting Jonas back to her home where she lived with her mother. Jonas met her mother that night, who was wearing a nightgown and watching Law & Order. He only patted Chopra on the back that evening, no kiss, in an attempt to be respectful. It was a move Chopra jokingly told him during an interview was “too respectful if you ask me.”
They didn’t see each other for a year after they initially met for those two first dates, but once they had their third date after all that time, Jonas knew she was the one for him.
Nick Jonas’ proposal left Priyanka Chopra speechless
The couple took a trip to Crete for Chopra’s birthday in July of 2018. Jonas proposed after midnight and didn’t exactly get the response he was expecting.
“No joke—she took about 45 seconds. Forty-five seconds of silence,” he said, and then explained he just went ahead before she responded saying: “I’m going to put this ring on your finger now unless you have any objections.”
Chopra is Hindu and Jonas is Christian and their wedding was a 3-day long celebration of both religions and cultures. Jonas speaks very highly of his wife, her culture and religion, and has fully embraced the celebrations and customs that she celebrates. C
hopra told Vogue: “Nick did the Hindu prayers. The prayers are in Sanskrit. Even I can’t say them. But he did it in Sanskrit. The Indians were so impressed with their National Jiju.”
Jiju is a word in Hindi that means “sister’s husband” and has become a term of endearment for the star in India.
Priyanka Chopra warned Nick Jonas that she can’t cook
Long before Jonas came along, Chopra’s paternal grandmother had some concerns about her ability to find a husband. “Who’s going to marry her? She can’t cook,” Chopra’s grandmother once said.
Chopra’s mother didn’t know how to cook when she married her father, either, choosing to focus more on academic pursuits, and so her dad was supportive of them both living as they chose. He defended Chopra to his mother and said he’d send a cook with his daughter.
Her grandmother’s opinion apparently stuck with Chopra who warned Jonas when he proposed that she can’t cook saying: “Listen, you’re from a good southern home, you’re used to your mom making you amazing food. You’re not marrying that girl.”
Clearly this wasn’t a deal-breaker for Jonas, who readily admitted he can’t cook either. The two have been married since 2018.
