Why Tom Brady Says He’s ‘So Impressed’ With Patrick Mahomes
Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes will face off when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55. Not the first time they’ve gone head-to-head, the two quarterbacks are competitors who have a great deal of respect for each other.
Tom Brady had a post-game talk with Patrick Mahomes
In only his second NFL season and his first as a starter, Mahomes went up against Brady and the New England Patriots. Playing for the AFC championship title, Brady was on his way to securing his ninth Super Bowl appearance. Meanwhile, Mahomes had garnered attention as a standout player in the NFL. After a close game that ended in an overtime victory for the Patriots, Brady took a few minutes to speak to Mahomes in the locker room.
During a 2019 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Mahomes opened up about the conversation he and Brady had.
“It was affirmation of what I’d been doing the whole year, that I was doing it the right way,” he said. “As a young quarterback, you don’t understand that. You try to put in as much time and work as possible and try to win as many games as possible, and for him to come talk to me and show me that respect, from Tom, it meant I was doing it the right way.”
The following season Mahomes would go on to win his first Super Bowl and the NFL’s MVP award.
Tom Brady says the young NFL player has ‘everything it takes’
Speaking to ESPN in a YouTube video published on Feb. 4, 2021, Brady discussed talking to Mahomes in the locker room. Asked why he followed up with the now-25-year-old after the game, Brady said he wanted to express just how “impressed” he was with Mahomes’ performance both on and off the field.
“Well, I think I’m just so impressed with Pat as a young player,” Brady said. “There’s one thing about the physical skill but there’s also how endearing he is to his teammates. I can see there’s a special quality about him that attracts the teammates to him. He’s a great leader. He has great charisma. He just has everything it takes.”
Brady continued, saying he’d heard stories about Mahomes and felt like he knew him despite not spending much time with him himself.
“He’s an exceptional player obviously but he looks to be an exceptional teammate and the times I’ve got to spend with him he’s got a maturity beyond his years and he’s going to be a great player in the NFL for a long time,” he added.
Mahomes is ‘excited’ to go up against the GOAT again
Brady is widely considered to be the greatest of all time (GOAT) in the NFL. He’s been through more than 20 seasons of professional football and has impressive stats. At 43, he’s getting yet another opportunity at a Super Bowl victory. Meanwhile, Mahomes has only one Super Bowl title to his name. Despite having less NFL experience than the GOAT, he’s “excited” to play Brady.
“To go up against Tom, all the success he’s had, it’s going to be a special moment,” he told on KCSP 610 Sports Radio‘s The Drive in January 2021. “I’m excited for the opportunity to go up against the GOAT.”
