Bones was one of the most popular crime investigation television shows of the last two decades. The popular drama/comedy was a hit amongst many fans who preferred a slightly lighter version of the popular crime show genre.

In a time when television show reboots and film follow-ups are more popular than ever, fans of Bones have begun to ask if the forensic investigation drama will have a revival of its own. What is Bones all about, and what have people involved with the show said about a possible future season or movie?

What is ‘Bones’ about?

Airing from 2005 to 2017 for 12 seasons, Bones followed the forensic investigations of FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and forensic anthropologist expert Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel). The show was an untraditional mix of comedy and criminal procedure, which was a major reason for the show’s popularity.

Another reason for the show’s popularity is the partnership between Seeley and Temperance, both professionally and romantically. The pairs witty banter was loved by many fans, as was their romance that began at the end of Season 6 of the show. The two characters were married in the show and had two children: a boy and a girl.

How ‘Bones’ ended

It can be difficult to have a satisfying end to a long-running series, just ask Game of Thrones fans. Bones, however, was able to pull off the tricky landing and gave their loyal fans a fitting and satisfying conclusion.

After 12 seasons on the FOX network, the show ended with a bang, literally. In the series finale, one of the show’s villains, Mark Kovac (Gerardo Celasco) planted an explosive device in the Jeffersonian building. Kovac’s intention was to kill the Bones group, but his plan was unsuccessful. The bomb did damage Brennan’s mind, causing her to have difficulty making the mental connections that had made her such a valuable resource when solving crimes.

In a tragic twist, Bones no longer understood bones. More important to what actually happened in the series finale is the way the cast of beloved characters said goodbye to their loyal fans. Seeley gave his love Temperance a beautiful speech about their everlasting love and one that served as a wonderful farewell for the show and its beloved characters for fans.

‘Bones’: Are Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz Still Friends?

While fans may wish for more Bones, the chances of getting it looks pretty grim. Throughout the show, the creative team and cast clashed with the executives of the FOX network, the channel where the show aired. Time slot changes and other battles between the show and network have left a bad taste in the mouth of the show’s creative team.

The bad blood between network and show includes a 2019 scandal, in which the FOX corporation was ordered to pay Boreanaz, Deschanel, and producer Barry Josephson $179 million. This payment was the result of Boreanaz, Deschanel and Josephson’s claims that they had been the victims of fraud by the company, and not adequately paid for the profits their show had produced through the years.

Another reason that renewal may not be in the cards is Boreanaz’s reluctance to look backward concerning his work. Some hope for a Bones reunion remains, however, as Boreanaz has previously returned to star in popular shows. Boreanaz left the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer to star in the spin-off show AngelThe star of Angel, did make multiple returns to the parent show Buffy.

Also casting doubt on the revival is Bones’ comments herself. In an interview with TVLine, Deschanel said about a possible movie: “I don’t know if I would be open to it… I don’t have a hard-and-fast rule on that, so we’ll see.”

Fans of the show have clamored for a continuation of the show, but there seem to be a number of factors that will stop it from happening.
