Captain Marvel was a hit at the box office and with fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But for as good as the film was, some fans think the sequel may turn out to be even better.

It wouldn’t be unheard of in the MCU: many of the sequels have improved on the original version.

One sequel that many fans believe was an upgrade was the second entry in the Captain America series. So can Captain Marvel 2 follow in that film’s footsteps?

How ‘Captain Marvel’ set up a new superhero for success

In Captain Marvel, MCU fans met Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson), an adopted Kree hero who finds herself on Earth stuck in the middle of a war between her people and the shapeshifting Skrulls.

Eventually, she discovers that she was originally from Earth and that the Skrulls are just trying to travel through space to reunite with their family members.

Danvers defeats the Kree warriors with the help of Nick Fury and gains the gratitude of the Skrulls. Marvel has announced plans for a sequel to Captain Marvel as part of the post-Avengers MCU. Along with heroes like Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and more, she’ll have another standalone film.

Captain Marvel showed plenty of promise that could lead to an even better sequel, much like another MCU series.

The Captain America ‘trilogy’

Captain America was the sole focus of three MCU films, including:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Captain America: Civil War

The first film introduced the character and was a period piece set in World War II. As solid as it was, it had to set up an origin story and lay the groundwork for the character.

Meanwhile, Civil War was a star-studded, entertaining blockbuster, but it worked better as another Avengers movie than a Captain America film.

What made Winter Soldier great is that it split the difference between the two. It didn’t have to set up the character, just let him develop.

It didn’t feature too many extra superheroes — Falcon, Black Widow, and Nick Fury all supported Cap, but they were clearly serving his larger story. Winter Soldier is great because it tells a singular, focused story that allows the character of Captain America to shine. It also improved on the first film significantly.

The question is, will Captain Marvel 2 do the same?

A recent Reddit thread featured MCU fans speculating on their excitement for Captain Marvel 2. They had plenty to say about the film’s potential, which they gather is rather high. One of the fans compared it to Winter Soldier

“I have such a good feeling about this. I think it’s going to be like Captain America. The first was really solid. A little safe, but solid. And then the second movie just absolutely blew the doors off!”

Winter Soldier was stylistically different from The First Avenger, but it was nevertheless a great film. It combined the aesthetic of 70s spy films with the current MCU, and fans loved it. Can Captain Marvel 2 accomplish the same feat?

It’s certainly possible. Captain Marvel provided the series with a solid foundation. It established the character and gave her a simple yet compelling story. Now that she’s helped the Avengers battle Thanos, Captain Marvel’s story could go in any number of directions.

It should also be a pivotal part of setting up (or moving forward) the next phase of the MCU, so expect plenty of cameos from other heroes. There’s no shortage of options for the film in terms of storylines or characters, so the possibilities are limitless. Expect Captain Marvel’s follow up to improve on the original, much like Captain America’s did as well.
