Broadway’s The Prom boasted a short-lived but triumphant run on the Great White Way. The Tony-nominated musical followed Broadway stars (borderline has-beens) on a mission to rid of their narcissistic public images. In a desperate attempt to rival their industry do-gooders, they head to Indiana, coming to the aid of a lesbian high schooler facing exclusion from her prom. The musical comedy — filled to the brim with liberal political laughs and a ton of heart — won audiences over, including the well-known filmmaker Ryan Murphy

A Netflix adaptation of the musical will premiere on Netflix in December, starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, Kerry Washington, Andrew Rannells, Nicole Kidman, and more. The all-star cast will put on their dancing shoes and bust out the pipes, hoping to reach the entertainment level inherent to its stage predecessor. Yet, will all the musical numbers from the show make it into the movie; could the heartwarming ballads and the comedic over-the-top numbers all find their way into the Netflix film?

Ryan Murphy has confirmed that every song in the Broadway musical will be in the movie

As Town&Country notes, Murphy has confirmed that every song in the Broadway production will be in the movie. Yet, it’s likely that, with a cinematic level budget, the setting and dance numbers will reach unparalleled heights.

With every song making it into the movie, most of the lead characters will receive their moment in the spotlight. Nicole Kidman will receive an uplifting and funky number titled “Zazz.” Meryl Streep gets to sing a song lost between narcissism and altruism titled “It’s Not About Me.”

James Corden gets a song of excitement about attending the prom. And, Andrew Rannels will get to teach the townsfolks about the true meaning of “Love Thy Neighbor.” Yet, in the Broadway production, not every main character get a moment in the spotlight — to belt their own number. And, according to Murphy, the movie will add one more song. Could the song be for Kerry Washington’s character?

Netflix’s ‘The Prom’ will feature 1 number new to the movie

In the Netflix movie The Prom, Kerry Washington will play Alyssa’s (Ariana DeBose) mom. She is a conservative mother who yearns for her daughter to lead the perfect life, yet “perfect” in this mother’s eyes is quite distorted.

Her daughter is secretly dating the girl who is being kept from attending the prom. In the Broadway musical, this character does not boast a solo. Yet, given Washington’s star power, it seems likely that the one song added will go to her.

Washington can sing quite well, and she is known for her love for all songs Disney musical, as she explained during an interview with Jordin Sparks. It’s likely that Washington will sing to or about her daughter, giving the character a bit more time in the spotlight (and an added layer of character development) absent in the Broadway production. Yet, this remains a presumption.
