Will ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 Happen?
Disney+ fans have mixed feelings about the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series. The Star Wars series focuses on Obi-Wan’s whereabouts after defeating Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar 10 years prior. The miniseries certainly seems like it has more story to tell long after the finale of the first season ends. So, what’s the status of Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?
How many parts are in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’?
The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi contains six episodes each spanning about an hour. The show was created as a limited series to bridge the gap between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
Revenge of the Sith showed the creation of Darth Vader. After Obi-Wan regretfully defeated Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, Anakin lived to become the half-man, half-machine infamous to Star Wars fans. Now, 10 years after the creation of Darth Vader, Obi-Wan comes face to face with his padawan-turned-monster for the first time.
The six-part limited series doesn’t just focus on Vader and Obi-Wan. The plot centers around Obi-Wan saving a young, captured Leia. Reva, an Imperial Inquisitor, hopes to garner Vader’s attention by capturing Obi-Wan’s attention. But she ultimately wants to defeat Vader. By the season finale, she learns that Leia isn’t alone. There’s another young boy – Luke – on Tattooine that Vader seemingly has no idea about.
Will ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ have a season 2?
Will Star Wars fans get to see Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?
So far, there’s nothing confirmed about another show season, and it was created as a limited series, likely with one season in mind. With that said, it seems like the actors are open to the idea. The show serves as an excellent addition to fans who loved the Star Wars prequel films, or it can be its own standalone show, so it’s drawing in quite the crowd. Darth Vader actor Hayden Christensen verified this in an interview, according to The Direct.
“If you haven’t seen the prequels, or didn’t like the prequels, this show is still a standalone thing,” Christensen explained. “Plus, it’s got that nice recap at the beginning. That’s all you need to know.”
Obi-Wan actor Ewan McGregor told RadioTimes.com that he hopes he gets to continue playing Obi-Wan in the future. “I hope it’s not the last time I play him,” McGregor said. “I hope I do it again. I’d like to do it again. I mean I had such a great time doing this, I’m sure we can think of a few more stories before I turn into Alec Guinness. Don’t you think?”
Forbes notes Obi-Wan Kenobi drew the most extensive viewership for any Star Wars program to date. This could also indicate that the limited series could return for another season.
Hayden Christensen would love to continue playing Darth Vader
Not only would Ewan McGregor like to tell more stories as Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Hayden Christensen is open to returning as Darth Vader. Christensen played Anakin Skywalker in the prequel films, and he made his return for the Disney+ series. He’s received a lot of love from fans after seemingly exiting the Star Wars franchise.
“There’s more there to explore,” he told Entertainment Tonight Canada, according to Esquire. “I would love [to] continue my journey with him.”
While talking to AP Entertainment, Esquire notes Christensen described putting the Vader suit back on as an “emotional experience.”
“Putting the Vader costume back on was incredible,” he said. “It comes with such a presence, you know? You put it on, and it just informs so much the way you feel. And for me, it was very sort of cathartic in a way, too, just because this is a character that has meant a lot to me, and has sort of stayed with me over the years, and getting to come back and continue with it was an emotional experience.”
