Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s ‘Horrible’ Wedding Was a Night They Both Want to Forget
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship has been under a microscope ever since Pinkett revealed that she’d had an affair with a family friend several years back. She and Smith were separated at the time, but when the two discussed the romance on her Facebook series “Red Table Talk,” fans were shocked. It turns out the couple never wanted to get married, though, and their “horrible” wedding is one they wish they could forget.
Jada Pinkett cried when she learned she and Will Smith were having a baby
Smith was married prior to dating Pinkett, but he always felt he had a connection with her. The two met on the set of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and once he and his first wife split up, he and Pinkett started a romance.
The two dated for about two years before Pinkett became pregnant with Smith’s child. She revealed in a “Red Table Talk” episode that she knew she was pregnant from the moment of conception — and she was not happy about it. Rather, she cried nonstop.
Pinkett cried while walking down the aisle
Pinkett had never wanted to get married. But once she learned that she and Smith were having a baby, there was intense pressure to wed, most of which came from her mother. Pinkett and Smith went ahead with a wedding, though Pinkett was crying for most of the day. “It was a mess,” said Pinkett’s mother, Adrienne Banfield Jones, according to USA Today. “Jada was sick; she was very unpleasant.”
Pinkett and Smith both described their wedding as “horrible,” and she was sick over having to get married. “”I was so upset that I had to have a wedding… I went crying down the freakin’ aisle getting married.”
The two don’t consider themselves husband and wife
Pinkett and Smith’s marriage is unlike most couples. The two have been through a lot in the 25 years since they started dating, and they’ve come to several realizations. The couple went through some ups and downs, and they no longer consider themselves husband and wife. Rather, they call themselves life partners and refer to their marriage as a life partnership.
“We have all these expectations. ‘Oh, this is what a husband is. This is what a wife is.’ I started dissolving all the ideas and expectations and labels,” Pinkett said.
Smith once said that divorce was never an option
Earlier this year, Smith and Pinkett opened up about what it was like when their marriage was at its lowest point. The two separated for some time several years back; they wanted to find happiness within themselves. But during their time apart, Pinkett got into an “entanglement” (affair) with family friend August Alsina. Still, these days, the two aren’t giving up on their marriage. Smith has since opened up about how divorce was not an option for the couple, who have continued to rebuild their relationship from the ground up.
