Will Smith Wasn’t Happy When Jaden Smith Started Wearing Skirts
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith have talked about their kids, Jaden and Willow Smith, quite often over the years. And Jaden is truly making a name for himself. From his fashion to his music and his commitment to social justice, the young Smith is paving his own way.
We can’t forget that Jaden is committed to breaking gender norms, too. He once said he wanted to wear skirts to ultimately help other kids get bullied less. Unfortunately, it seems Will didn’t quite understand. Here’s what happened.
Jaden Smith hoped wearing skirts would stop bullying in schools
Jaden has plenty of eyebrow-raising outfits, but his decision to promote men wearing skirts received quite a lot of attention. In July 2016, Paper reported the star, who was just 17 at the time, commented on the reason why he chose to wear a skirt for the Louis Vuitton campaign.
“So, you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him,” Jaden said.
Jaden was acutely aware he had the ability to enact change with the campaign as well. “It was lit because we all knew that we were going to impact the culture and change the game and make a difference,” he added.
Since the Louis Vuitton campaign, Jaden’s proved wearing skirts and dresses is here to stay. “If I Wanna Wear A Dress, Then I Will, And That Will Set The New Wave,” he tweeted in 2018.
Will Smith wasn’t sure about Jaden wearing skirts
While Jaden is confident in his choice of clothing, it seems Will wasn’t so sure. People notes Jada said Will had “feelings” about Jaden choosing to wear skirts.
“He has his feelings on that for sure,” Jada said on Red Table Talk. “I remember Will calling me and being like, ‘Have you talked about this Jaden and him wearing a skirt?’ And I said, ‘Yeah I have. He’s pretty happy about it.”
Jada continued on and stated Jaden “talked about wanting to wear skirts to give kids the freedom, to give other people the freedom to think out of the box for themselves and not feel like in doing that that they would be bullied or be attacked in some way.” It seems she truly understands and respects his motivations.
Jaden created a gender-neutral clothing line
Jaden remains committed to stomping on gender norms by promoting gender-neutral clothes. Back in 2016, Variety interviewed Jaden about his clothing line, MSFTS.
“It’s pronounced ‘misfits,’” Jaden explained. “I took the ‘I’ out of ‘misfits’ because we’re a team and there is no ‘I’ in team. It’s a place for the lost kids and everyone to go, and something for them to have.”
The goal of the line is to shatter the idea of men’s and women’s clothing as being totally separate. Jaden continued on by saying the line is made for “the girl that wants to be a tomboy or the boy that wants to wear a skirt, and people try to condemn. We’re here for you. Tell us your stories. If someone at your school’s trying to pick on you, it doesn’t matter because Jaden Smith’s got your back.”
We’re sure there’s plenty more to come in 2020 for Jaden’s fashion. As for Will, it doesn’t matter if he likes the skirts or not, as Jaden will continue to do exactly as he pleases.
