Will The MCU Bring Hulkling and Wiccan’s Comic Book Romance to Life?
In the Marvel comics, Hulkling and Wiccan have been in a long-term romantic relationship, filled with many ups and downs, for years. Through disagreements and various intergalactic dilemmas, the duo has proved their love and commitment to one another. Based on current Marvel Studios projects, the Marvel Cinematic Universe could begin to lay the foundation for their characters in Phase 4. Thus, two gay characters (and their romantic journey) could be central in the Young Avengers depiction — bringing much-needed LGBTQ representation to the franchise at last.
Wiccan is Scarlet Witch’s son, who will presumably make his debut in the upcoming series WandaVision. Hulkling is Princelle Anelle (daughter of the rulers of the Skrull empire) and Kree Captain Mar-Vell’s son. Because Anelle conceived Hulklking during the Skull-Kree war, she sent him away to ensure his safety. Though his origin story could come to light via some multiverse tinkering or Captain Marvel flashbacks, it may be easier to adjust Hulkling’s birth. What if his origin and genetic makeup are more in line with a name that clearly references the Jade Giant?
Wiccan will likely appear in the upcoming Disney+ series ‘WandaVision’
Reports indicate that WandaVision will loosely follow the narrative set forth in the House of M comics. Meaning, she is bound to will a perfect family life into existence, as indicated by the black and white, I Love Lucy-inspired promotional materials. And, if she brings Vision back to life, her children (Wiccan and Speed) seem destined to follow suit.
Both children are conceived through magical means, only further fracturing the fragmented reality Wanda’s tumultuous emotional and mental state creates. Yet, just because her kids are magical does not mean they are not real. And, if created via her mind, who is to say they age in accordance with natural law? WandaVision could very easily introduce two characters who become pivotal to the Young Avengers team — a team that often includes Hulkling.
It may be easier to make Hulkling She-Hulk’s son in the MCU (rather than Anelle’s)
With She-Hulk coming to Disney+ after WandaVision, Wiccan may already exist in the franchise. Yet, depending on the timeline, his age will be undetermined. She-Hulk could easily have a son, Hulkling, as opposed to adding to or rewriting the Captain Marvel story to incorporate the character.
She-Hulk has been romantically involved with the likes of Juggernaut, Hercules, Luke Cage, and more. A romantic relationship could introduce the mutants or the X-Men. And, one of She-Hulk’s relationships could lead to Hulkling, adding a member to the Young Avenger. With Hulkling and Wiccan teaming up to fight the baddies, life-or-death situations may begin to spell the beginning of their romance on the big screen.
