Will There Be a Cyborg Movie? ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Is the Perfect Setup
Unlike the 2017 version, Zack Snyder’s Justice League took a deeper dive into Victor Stone, aka Cyborg’s history, relationships, and abilities. It seamlessly set up a future storyline for the superhero. But considering all the drama surrounding those involved, will there be a Cyborg movie?
‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ features more of Cyborg’s story
Joss Whedon’s 2017 Justice League watered Ray Fisher’s Cyborg down to a one-note superhero. But with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, fans got to see Zack Snyder’s original vision for the character.
Unlike Whedon’s version, the new film reveals Victor’s backstory. And in flashbacks, it highlights his connection to his mother and explains why his relationship with his dad is so strained.
Snyder’s cut also explores more of the superhero’s powers, including his ability to manipulate financial markets and various technologies. Toward the end of the film, Victor envisions his family and overcomes his deepest fears to save the world. This scene truly gave the character and the movie heart, and it paved the way for future Cyborg stories.
But will ‘Justice League’ fans get a Cyborg movie?
Zack Snyder’s Justice League may have set up a Cyborg movie, but as of now, it doesn’t seem like fans will get one. After Fisher blasted Whedon for alleged abuses on set, he criticized DC Films president Walter Hamada for undermining the investigation. And he suggested he would never work for the executive again.
“Walter Hamada is the most dangerous kind of enabler,” Fisher tweeted. “His lies, and WB PR’s failed Sept 4th hit-piece, sought to undermine the very real issues of the Justice League investigation. I will not participate in any production associated with him.”
Fisher was slated to reprise his role in the upcoming Flash movie. But after his comments, WarnerMedia responded with a statement alleging the tweet was the actor’s official refusal to appear in the film.
“Last summer, Mr. Fisher was offered the opportunity to reprise his role as Cyborg in The Flash,” a studio spokesperson said via Deadline. “Given his statement that he will not participate in any film associated with Mr. Hamada, our production is now moving on.”
In a January 2021 tweet, Fisher noted that he disagreed with the studio’s decision to write him out of The Flash but wasn’t surprised they did. However, in a recent chat with Comic Book Debate, when talking about a potential Cyborg movie, Fisher revealed he would want former Flash director Rick Famuyiwa to take the helm if it were to be made.
Warner Bros. hasn’t revealed any plans to make a Cyborg movie
After the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it looks like Warner Bros. is ready to wash their hands of anything Snyder-related. And when talking to Variety, WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff revealed the studio is excited to be heading in a different direction.
“We’re just so happy that he could bring his cut of the Justice League to life because that wasn’t in the plan until about a year ago,” Sarnoff said. “With that comes the completion of his trilogy. We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”
So, as of now, it doesn’t look like a Cyborg movie is happening. But that doesn’t mean fans won’t get one in the future. In the meantime, there’s plenty of Cyborg action to enjoy in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is currently streaming on HBO Max.
