Winona Ryder Says She Had an ‘Extra-Large Breakdown’ After Her Breakup With Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were one of the hottest couples of the ’90s. Their relationship was as much of a staple to the decade as neon windbreakers and Tamagotchis. But after breaking off their engagement in 1993, Ryder says she had an “extra-large breakdown” following their tragic split.
It was love at first sight for Depp and Ryder
From the moment Depp laid eyes on Ryder, it was love at first sight. He was instantly drawn to her big brown eyes and her adoration for the same music and poetry as him. And according to Depp, he had never been so in love with anyone else in his life.
“I’d die for her,” Depp has been quoted saying. “I love her so much. I don’t know what I would do without her.”
As for Ryder, she has openly stated that Depp was her first real love.
“When I met Johnny, I was a pure virgin,” she said, according to InStyle. “He changed that. He was my first everything. My first real kiss. First real boyfriend. My first fiance. The first guy I had sex with. So he’ll always be in my heart. Forever… Kind of funny that word.”
The two were so in love that they got engaged after only five months of knowing each other. Depp even got a tattoo that said “Winona Forever” on his bicep.
“I love Winona,” Depp said, according to his unauthorized biography. “I’m going to love her forever. Putting her on my arm solidified it. The truth is very powerful. Believe me. This is not something I took lightly.”
But four years later, they broke things off, which left both parties devastated.
Winona Ryder suffered an ‘extra-large breakdown’ after her breakup with Johnny Depp
According to Elle Magazine, Ryder confessed to having an “extra-large breakdown” after her split with Depp.
‘I had just had my first real breakup, the first heartbreak,” she told the magazine. “Everybody else just thought I had everything in the world, but inside, I was completely lost.”
‘I remember feeling I can’t complain about anything because I’m so lucky,’ she adds.
The ‘Stranger Things’ star admits that she was ’embarrassingly dramatic’ after their breakup
According to Ryder, her behavior following their split was “embarrassingly dramatic.” Yet to her defense, as she reveals, she was only 19 at the time.
“I was very depressed after breaking off my engagement with Johnny,” she told Cinema.com. “I was embarrassingly dramatic at the time, but you have to remember I was only 19 years old.”
Ryder goes on, saying that breakups are even more challenging when they’re so heavily documented in the tabloids.
“Breakups are hard for anybody,” she continued, “but it’s particularly tough when it’s being documented, and you see the person’s picture everywhere. Most people don’t have that added problem when they break up with someone.”
