‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Reunion: Cast Recreates Crazy Funky Junky Hat Song
“What’s that? A hat?…” If you’re a Wizards of Waverly Place fan, you know the rest. When some of the cast from the hit Disney Channel series had a mini-reunion recently to play a round of Wizards trivia, they had to recreate the “Crazy Funky Junky Hat” song.
The ‘Crazy Funky Junky Hat’ song
The “Crazy Funky Junky Hat” song made an appearance several times in season 1 episode 4 of Wizards of Waverly Place, called “New Employee.” Alex (Selena Gomez) and Harper (Jennifer Stone) sing the song when they see someone in a hat, with the two first breaking out in the tune when they see a student at school. The song is also sung when Harper works at the Waverly Sub Station and they see a customer in a cowboy hat and again, when the two characters are at the “Gurtbarn” and Alex ends up with frozen yogurt on her head.

Selena Gomez and Jennifer Stone came up with the dance
The lyrics to the song were cute and funny but Gomez and Stone gave the song some extra flair with an accompanying dance.
Series creator Todd Greenwald shared the story behind the song and dance, telling International Business Times how the actors came up with the moves.
“It was to highlight a Harper and Alex bonding moment, to show that they had some history together,” Greenwald explained about the song. “It came out of the writers’ room, but where it really came to life was when Jennifer and Selena gave it the dance.”
He continued, “We didn’t write the dance. The words came out of the writers’ room, but it really came to life once it hit the stage and Selena and Jennifer got a hold of it.”
“It was just a collaboration of a silly line of words, brought to life during run-through by Jennifer and Selena. They gave it the life,” he added.
The cast recreated the song during a mini reunion
When David Henrie, Gregg Sulkin, and Stone got together for a mini Wizards of Waverly Place reunion, they tested their memories about the show. Of course, the “Crazy Funky Junky Hat” song came up…. and naturally, they decided to recreate the bit of TV magic.
Henrie said, “I get comments to this day — people are like ‘do the crazy funky junky hat’” and then a lightbulb went off as he told his co-stars, “We should totally do that!!”
Henrie also noted at the start of the video, “Make sure if you want a reboot to like, comment, and let us know because those kind of analytics are helpful to a reboot’s cause.”
Henrie and Sulkin had dished on a possible reboot during an earlier reunion video they did together. “I’ve talked to some people. Talked to some people that are decision-makers, to my sis Selena and I have to be very tactful with my response here because I’ll say there’s a lot of goodwill,” Henrie explained. “I don’t think anyone’s opposed to the idea, but I think it’s a matter of time. Could be tomorrow. Could be a year from now. But I’d say there’s reasonable hope that there will be a reunion one day.”
