Would Lupita Nyong’o Return for More ‘Star Wars’ Movies? Some Fans Hope So
Us and Black Panther actor, Lupita Nyong’o, actually voiced one Star Wars character in the sequel trilogy. Although the Skywalker Saga has come to a close, some fans are wondering whether she would return for future projects. Here’s what we know about her character, Maz Kanata.
Lupita Nyong’o voices one character in the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy
Although her role was small, (literally,) Lupita Nyong’o had a part in the breakout Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. This was a very different role for Lupita Nyong’o, as the actor appeared as the CGI character, Maz, who is an old friend of Han Solo and Chewbacca. She offers Rey wisdom and guidance, even though she was a lot shorter than her.
“These worlds are created by human beings,” she said during an interview with The Guardian, “and at the end of the day they are created to illuminate something about us. So, under all the makeup, it’s just human relationships and wants and desires. All we know is how to be human. And the way we take in the world that isn’t human is also human.”
Lupita Nyong’o returned to voice her character for ‘The Rise of Skywalker’
The actor’s role in Star Wars didn’t end with The Force Awakens. Her character, Maz, also has a small part in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, giving advice to Finn, Poe, and Rose from another planet.
As somewhat of a voice of wisdom throughout the movie, the character returned for the final movie in the sequel trilogy. She stays at Leia’s side throughout the fight and gives Chewbacca comfort after her passing.
The Rise of Skywalker is the final movie in the Skywalker Saga, though, which means fans have presumably seen the last of characters like Rey, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Maz.
Will Lupita Nyong’o appear in future ‘Star Wars’ projects?
There are a few Star Wars projects slated for their debut. That includes the Rian Johnson trilogy, new episodes of The Mandalorian, and a series about the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. That begs the question, will Nyong’o’s character turn for future Star Wars movies?
Unfortunately, Lucasfilm is done with the Skywalker Saga, taking a chance to explore other aspects of this galaxy far, far, away. That means that fans have most likely seen the last of Maz Kanata.
With Nyong’o working on a number of other franchises and movies since The Force Awakens, (most notably Us and Black Panther,) it’s pretty unlikely that she’d return for future Lucasfilm productions. That hasn’t stopped some fans from sharing their love for the actor/Maz, asking for more content featuring her character.
Star Wars movies featuring the voice of Lupita Nyong’o, including The Rise of Skywalker and The Force Awakens, are available on Disney’s streaming platform. To learn more about Disney+ and to subscribe, visit their website.
