‘Y: 1883’: ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel Sneak Peek to Air During Super Bowl 55
Yellowstone is getting a spinoff. A prequel series about the origins of the Dutton family is coming to Paramount+ in 2021, ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Group announced on Feb. 5. Y: 1883 will focus on the origins of the clan of Montana ranchers.
Kevin Costner plays the powerful rancher John Dutton in the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone. The new show — also from creator Taylor Sheridan — will focus on how his ancestors built their empire.
‘Yellowstone’ prequel trailer to air during the Super Bowl
A sneak peek for the Yellowstone prequel will air during Super Bowl 55 on Sunday, Feb. 7. In the brief teaser, a gruff-voiced man says, “I don’t care if you live or die, but should you live, you tell them about me.”
A release date for Y: 1883 was not announced, nor was there any news about the cast. Paramount+ is the new name for CBS’s streaming service, CBS All Access.
Yellowstone, which also stars Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, and Wes Bentley, is one of the most-watched scripted dramas on cable. The season 3 premiere drew 6.5 million total viewers. A fourth season will air sometime in 2021.
“I am excited to continue the story of Yellowstone and … to keep on expanding the family for the fans,” Sheridan said in a statement. The prequel series is part of a larger, multi-year deal that will see Sheridan create multiple new series for Paramount Network, Paramount+, CBS, and other ViacomCBS platforms.
‘Y: 1883’ will follow the Dutton family’s westward journey
The Yellowstone prequel will offer the show’s diehard fans a look at the history of the Dutton family. Here’s the synopsis:
Y: 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.
‘Yellowstone’ Season 4: Is John Dutton dead?
The news of a Yellowstone prequel is exciting, but it doesn’t answer the big question that is on the mind of most fans: Is John Dutton dead?
Yellowstone Season 3 ended on a major cliffhanger. The fate of Costner’s character was left up in the air after he was shot by an unknown assailant. That has some fans worried the actor might be exiting the series. Several other key characters were also attacked in the tense season-ending episode, including John’s daughter Beth (Reilly), whose office was bombed. His son Kayce (Grimes) was also set upon by gunmen in his office.
The dramatic ending has fueled tons of fan speculation about what might be in store for Yellowstone Season 4. Costner played coy when asked about his future on the show during a recent interview with Good Day New York.
“I can’t say. There’s an ending that you’re gonna see, hopefully it’s a powerful one for you.”
