‘Yellowjackets’: How Many Seasons Will There Be?
Showtime has a hit on its hands with the new survival drama series Yellowjackets. Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the show finds a high school soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness after its plane goes down in 1996. Trapped for 19 months, the castaways turned to desperate measures to survive — including occultism and cannabilism — and continue to deal with the trauma of what happened in the woods decades later.
The first season managed to resolve a lot of the big questions. But there’s so much ground left to cover and directions the show could take. How many seasons of Yellowjackets will there be before the story is finished, then? Lyle and Nickerson have actually mapped out a plan for the show’s run.
The creators of ‘Yellowjackets’ revealed their ‘plan’ for the series
Speaking to Vulture, Lyle said the plan is to have five seasons of Yellowjackets, give or take a few.
“We originally pitched it as five seasons,” Lyle shared. “To some extent that’s just a function of how you have to pitch a show. When buyers are hearing ideas, particularly at a network like Showtime, they want to know that you have a plan and there’s more than one season worth of story.”
She continued: “I believe we’ve said five seasons earlier in interviews and have regretted it every day since, because people really latched onto that. I think what we’ll say about that is that we have a plan, and we do feel very good about the potential for story moving forward. But we have no interest in beating a dead horse or dragging things out longer than the story dictates.”
Lyle said she believes “the show and the story and the characters will tell us when they’ve reached a natural conclusion.”
“But for now, we feel really good about moving forward, and we feel confident that we have a lot of good stuff that we’re excited about,” she added. “And all you can do is really hope that other people will be excited as well.”
Their plans for the next season of ‘Yellowjackets’
Yellowjackets still has plenty to explore until then, from Lottie’s survival to Taissa’s basement altar. While Lyle did not share specific details about Yellowjackets Season 2, she teased it would dive more into the cult the girls formed in the woods.
“We are very much interested in exploring the theme and concept of belief and what that means for us in terms of our worldview — the way that we interact with the world around us, the way that we interact with other people, and forge those relationships,” Lyle told Entertainment Weekly.
“That is absolutely something that we will be investigating by means of this growing belief that has started to emerge amongst the girls in the wilderness and what that might mean in the present day,” she continued.
When it comes to the cast of Yellowjackets Season 2, you can expect the return of actors such as Juliette Lewis (Natalie), Christina Ricci (Misty), Melanie Lynskey (Shauna), and Tawny Cypress (Taissa), among others. New faces will also appear, Lyle and Nickerson confirmed, including an adult Lottie.
Watch the series now on Showtime
While an exact release date for season 2 is unclear, Showtime executive Gary Levine told Vulture he expects the show to return by the end of 2022.
“I think our audiences deserve that, and I also think that when you have a show that has this kind of a momentum, you don’t want to let it dissolve,” he told the outlet.
In the meantime, fans can stream the first season now on Showtime.
