Yellowstone season 4 has been a difficult one for Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica’s (Kelsey Asbille) marriage. It’s also been tough for their son Tate (Brecken Merrill). The season began with Kayce under attack in the Livestock Commissioner’s office. At the same time, a gunman went after Monica and Tate on the Dutton Ranch.
The fallout from these attacks has left serious emotional scars, and they are struggling to move on. Could this be the end for Kayce and Monica? According to Grimes, Yellowstone fans will see his character “finally make a decision.”
Kayce Dutton is caught between his father and son in ‘Yellowstone’ season 4
During a recent episode of the Official Yellowstone Podcast, Jefferson White (Jimmy Hurdstrom) and Luke Grimes discussed Kayce’s character journey in season 4. White explained that Kayce is caught between his duties to his dad, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), and the Yellowstone Ranch, and his responsibilities as a father and husband.
“He’s caught in this middle generation,” White said. “He feels this tremendous responsibility to John Dutton that pulls him in one direction. His father’s asking him for one thing and his son, Tate, is asking him for something completely different.”
Pulled in different directions
After the attacks in the season 4 premiere, Kayce moved his wife and son out of the Dutton log cabin. They eventually found a home of their own. But as the situation on the Yellowstone Ranch becomes more tense, Kayce might have to abandon Monica and Tate in favor of his father and siblings.
“And so he’s getting pulled in these two – you know, his responsibility to his father and his responsibility to his son, his responsibility to his sister and his responsibility to his brother,” White explained. “It just feels like no matter what he does, even when he operates from a place of love, he’s also creating rifts on the other side of the equation.”
Luke Grimes says ‘Yellowstone’ fans will see his character ‘finally make a decision’
Grimes agreed with White’s assessment of his character. He said that Yellowstone season 4 is when fans “really see [Kayce] at the beginning stages of really making a hard decision about which sort of path he’s going to choose.”
“Which I think will feel really sort of nice to the audience – because you’re going to watch this guy finally make a decision,” Grimes said.
Will Kayce choose to protect his father, siblings, and the Yellowstone Ranch over his wife and son? Will something happen between Kayce and Avery? What impact will Monica’s pregnancy have on Kayce’s decision?
“To be with Tate, he has to distance himself from John,” White pointed out. “To be with John, to go and live on the ranch, he’s making things more difficult with Tate and Monica.”
‘Stuck between a rock and a hard place’
Grimes admitted that he is just as interested as Yellowstone fans are to find out how all of this plays out for his character. What side of the line will Kayce end up on “when this thing is all said and done”?
“This has been his journey since day one. He loves his immediate family more than anything, but he also has loyalty to the Duttons and to that legacy as well. He’s just stuck between a rock and a hard place,” Grimes told TV Insider.
“I think he knew that if he didn’t get Monica and Tate off the ranch, he probably would lose them. And so that being the most important thing, that’s what he’s trying to do.”
Who will Kayce Dutton choose in ‘Yellowstone’ season 4?
In season 4, Kayce Dutton has found himself torn between two families. But Grimes believes that if it really came down to it, Kayce would choose Monica and Tate over the Duttons.
“I think ultimately Kayce just wants to do what’s best for his immediate family, Monica and Tate. Sometimes I think through no fault of their own being with the Duttons just comes with a price,” Grimes told Hollywood Life.
“It’s kind of a balancing act, and it’s sort of the crux of the whole Kayce character. He’s trying to do the right thing. You know that about him. You know he’s a good guy. He’s trying to make the right choice, but there just doesn’t seem to be one most of the time. There’s just no right choice, and that’s where we find him.”
Yellowstone airs Sunday nights on the Paramount Network.
