‘Young Sheldon’ Just Introduced a Plot Hole About “Soft Kitty” for Fans of ‘the Big Bang Theory’
Young Sheldon, the prequel spinoff of The Big Bang Theory, has thrilled and delighted fans of the original series for years now, but as with most spinoffs, there have been some issues. Every so often, the writers of the spinoff forget some of Sheldon Cooper’s quirks, and fans are there to catch them. One peculiar plot hole regarding the lullaby, “Soft Kitty,” was just spotted by fans.
The Big Bang Theory fans noticed a plot hole in Young Sheldon pertaining to “Soft Kitty”
In season 4, episode 4 of Young Sheldon, Sheldon gets hurt while learning to ride a bike. With a cast on his arm, the then 11-year-old Sheldon is desperate to have his mom calm him down. Twin sister, Missy, helps Sheldon out and reminds him that he needs to figure out a way to comfort himself. He doesn’t bother calling his mom, but he did soothe himself by quietly singing “Soft Kitty” under his breath.
Screen Rant points out that Sheldon signing the song to himself while hurt is a bit of a plot hole. In The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon was adamant about when “Soft Kitty” could be used for comfort. An injury was not one of the approved uses of “Soft Kitty.” Fans were quick to consider it a plot hole, but was it really?
“Soft Kitty” was only ever supposed to be sung during illness
While Sheldon requested “Soft Kitty” after getting hurt, fans quickly pointed out that the song was never supposed to be sung during injuries. “Soft Kitty” was reserved for cases of illness. Sheldon did not consider being hurt an sickness, and thus, he would have never requested “Soft Kitty” after being hurt.
Sheldon himself explained when “Soft Kitty” should be used during season 3 of The Big Bang Theory. In the episode, “The Adhesive Duck Deficiency,” Penny asks Sheldon to sing her the song after slipping in the bathtub and dislocating her shoulder. Sheldon insisted he wouldn’t sing the song for her because it was only for sick people. In Sheldon’s mind, Penny was not ill.
But wait, is it really a plot hole?
While Sheldon initially suggested “Soft Kitty” was only to be used when someone was sick, he eventually acquiesced. Penny managed to get him to sing it to her after she reasoned that being injured and drugged was a form of sickness, even if she wasn’t technically suffering from an illness.
Since Sheldon eventually sang the song for her, it can be argued that the “Soft Kitty” issue is not a plot hole. It seems plausible that Sheldon, after thinking back, realized that Penny was right. If that’s the case, then the scene in Young Sheldon backs perfectly into The Big Bang Theory. There are plenty of plot holes in both shows, but this might not be one of them.
