Zatanna Rumored to Be the Next DCEU Character To Make Film Debut
DC Comics’ quest to roll out cinematic versions of its stable of characters continues. Zatanna is rumored to be one of the next heroes slated to pop up in the DC Extended Universe.
Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam made successful film debuts, and Henry Cavill said he wants to keep playing Superman on the big screen. Now, there’s a new rumor stating DCEU is making room for Zatanna Zatara to enter the scene.
Who is Zatanna?
If you’ve read the comic books or watched any of DC’s cartoons, then you are probably familiar with the top hat-wearing magician Zatanna.
The daughter of sorcerer John Zatara, Zatanna makes a living on stage as an illusionist, but her powers are anything but phony. Her lineage comes through the Leonardo da Vinci line and her magical abilities enable her to manipulate the elements, reality, and minds.
She can freeze people and objects, heal, create objects, cast spells by speaking backwards, and pretty much any other magical thing you can imagine. That includes fighting or channeling dark magic. In the comics, she even survived the Crisis storyline.
Zatanna Zatara’s been part of the Justice League and fought alongside heroes such as Batman, Hawkman, Constantine (her boyfriend), Catwoman, Green Arrow, and Supergirl. She’s one of DC’s most beloved characters.
Zatanna in a standalone film prompts wish list
Zatanna movie rumors have been floating around for a few years, but the latest one says Warner Bros. will put her in a live-action feature film.
According to DCEU Mythic, a project is in development that would feature her, but it’s unclear whether Zatanna would be a supporting character or the star of the show.
Per Comicbook.com, some fans want to see Ana de Armas play the sorceress. Jameela Jamil threw her hat in the ring as a potential Zatanna contender should the movie come to fruition.
In response to the Twitter announcement from DCEU Mythic, she tweeted the message below.
On Reddit, some fans stated they’d love to see Eva Green cast as the hero, and others wouldn’t mind Elizabeth Gillies yielding the wand.
Zatanna appeared on the small screen
Smallville fans might remember when Zatanna appeared in the flesh in seasons 8, 9, 10, and 11. She was first introduced during Chloe’s birthday party. After everyone bailed on Chloe, Zatanna made her cupcake levitate and told her to make a wish. The next morning, she woke up as Lois Lane.
Serinda Swan played the role and enchanted Clark into helping her with some personal trouble, making Lois Lane jealous in the process. Zatanna skills were nothing to scoff at in Smallville.
DCEU has upcoming plans for Batman and The Flash
We all know a Robert Pattinson Batman movie is on the way, but fans are excited about the prospect of seeing Michael Keaton reprise his role in The Flash film. DCEU has big plans for its future that includes sequels, introductions (Black Adam), and reboots such as James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
The latter’s cast features Idris Elba, Alice Braga, Viola Davis, Taika Waititi, Storm Reid, and John Cena. Fans will have to wait on more news about Zatanna, but can look forward to these other releases during the next two years.
