Zendaya Didn’t Care About Publicity Following Engagement to Tom Holland 

At the Golden Globes this Sunday, Zendaya rocked a large diamond engagement ring that Tom Holland recently gave her. The couple became engaged over the holiday season, and the Challengers star made her first public appearance with the ring at the awards ceremony. While she showed off the ring, she reportedly had little interest in announcing news of her engagement.

While staying with Zendaya’s family for Christmas, Holland proposed to his longtime girlfriend. The couple had discussed marriage frequently, but his proposal reportedly took her by surprise. 

“Tom figured the holidays were the best time to propose in a very low-key way,” a source told Us Weekly. “She didn’t want anything over the top.”

The couple is notoriously private, and she didn’t want to announce their engagement at the Golden Globes. Still, she made no effort to hide her ring on the red carpet. She reportedly didn’t care if people noticed it.

“Zendaya tried to keep it a secret but was very excited to show off her ring,” the source said. “She didn’t think people would notice but didn’t care either way.”

The fact that Zendaya didn’t use the Golden Globes red carpet as an opportunity to announce her engagement isn’t surprising given how private the couple has been. Holland said he had little interest in sharing anything about their life together with the public.

“Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible,” he told The Hollywood Reporter (via USA Today). “We don’t think that we owe it to anyone, it’s our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers.”

Zendaya said she has tried to find a balance between the parts of her life that are public and the ones she hopes to keep private. When they first began dating, they attempted to hide their relationship altogether, which she said was difficult.

“Parts of my life, I accept, are going to be public,” she told Elle. “I can’t not be a person and live my life and love the person I love. But also, I do have control over what I choose to share. It’s about protecting the peace and letting things be your own but also not being afraid to exist. You can’t hide. That’s not fun, either. I am navigating it more than ever now.”

He shared why he rarely attends red carpets with her

As Zendaya walked the red carpet with her new ring, Holland was nowhere in sight. He explained that while he will attend film premieres with her, he doesn’t like to attend other events. In his eyes, these are her moments, and he doesn’t want to take them away from her.

“[B]ecause it’s not my moment, it’s her moment,” he told Men’s Health, “and if we go together, it’s about us.”

He was not present at the Golden Globes.
