In 2020, Zendaya became the youngest person to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star took home the award for her role in the HBO show Euphoria.

The popular show wrapped up its second season in February 2022. And while Zendaya’s character wears very little makeup in Euphoria, that’s not to say she doesn’t know her way around a glitter eye makeup palette.

‘Euphoria’ is known for its intricate eye makeup

As the head of the makeup department on Euphoria, Doniella Davy is at the top of her game. She’s developed an impressive level of notoriety with a significant social media following. She also landed an Emmy win for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup.

According to CNN Style, her innovative makeup techniques have “captured the attention of Gen Z viewers.” The talented artist keeps audiences engaged and coming back for more, using iridescent gemstones to create winged eyeliner, fluorescent eyeshadow hues, and hand-painted miniature clouds.

Davy spoke with BuzzFeed about her experience working on the show. She admitted she and her team learned a lot from actors like Alexa Demie.

She acknowledged that Zendaya and some of the other Euphoria stars are accustomed to working with the best in the business. That high standard keeps the makeup department motivated to keep improving their skills as they “try to keep up” with the demanding job.

Fans of the drama series love the trendy, shimmery eye makeup that filled the screen for most of the first season. Glitter was an essential part of the look. And fans adored the fantasy elements Davy incorporated into the Euphoria character’s appearances.

In the BuzzFeed interview, the talented makeup artist gave the Rue actor credit. Zendaya taught her how to quickly and efficiently remove glitter makeup on the Euphoria set. She explained, “You take a makeup wipe, and you do one swipe across the glitter and then fold it over, so you’re not redepositing glitter on your eyelid.”

Davy said that as you continue to remove the glitter, you take another swipe and fold over the wipe again. Without irritating or pulling the skin, you can continue this method until the makeup is removed. She claimed this is the “most effective way to remove all of those glittery makeup looks.”

InStyle refers to the show’s makeup as extravagant, opulent, kitschy, and bold. And Davy explained the story behind her “twinkling Euphoria glam.”

“The point is for the makeup to first give the audience a little more insight into the emotional state of the character, and then to register as a cool makeup look, but never the other way around,” she stated.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Davy finds the inspiration for her unique looks from “the late 1960s aesthetic of supermodel Twiggy” and other influential ’70s glam rock moments. The artist loves how Gen Z Instagram accounts are “flipping the whole idea of beauty and makeup on its ass.”

Davy is reaching a level of notoriety most television makeup artists don’t experience. She launches her own Euphoria-inspired makeup line, Half Magic Beauty, this spring.
