The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic suspended production for ‘Euphoria’

The coronavirus pandemic put several Hollywood productions at a stand still. When WarnerMedia announced on behalf of HBO they would suspend production of the show until further notice, Zendaya was upset, but understanding. “We were supposed to go back to work on March 16,” she said in an interview with MJ Rodriguez for Variety. “I mean the scripts were written and I was just so excited — just to go back home is really what it feels like.” Within the next three to four days, production was shut down.

Despite being eager to get back to work, Zendaya admitted that she couldn’t complain. “I’m just grateful that I’m in the position I’m in,” she continued. “I’m very lucky to be safe and healthy and still know that I have a job — Euphoria — that will be there.” She’s excited to get back into her Chucks and start filming again, whenever that may be.

Zendaya cares about her role in ‘Euphoria’

Like so many actors, Zendaya has taken on the role of Rue head on, treating the character as if she were a real person. “Rue is obviously very different from me, but there’s something that feels like home,” she said about finding her inner Rue. “[The role] feels [like] stepping into shoes that you somehow already have worn before. I just felt like I was falling into her a lot.”

Zendaya compares Rue to a sister or best friend, but there’s also a bit of herself in the character. “In many ways, I feel like Rue is just me in another version of my life or a different way my life could’ve gone,” she explained. For season 2, Zendaya just wants the best for Rue. “I care about Rue as if she’s someone in my life. And I just want her to be OK.”

Zendaya’s hopes for ‘Euphoria’ season 2

Euphoria is a polarizing series that addresses difficult issues from drug use to rape, abuse, and bullying. These topics are hard to witness in a fictional setting, let alone address in reality. However, Euphoria has paced these issues front and center, ultimately making them easier for many fans to discuss.

“I think all we ever wanted was for people to feel seen through our work,” Zendaya said. Many fans of the series do feel seen, thanks to Euphoria. For season 2, Zendaya hopes to maintain that trend. “That’s all I want to continue to do — show the human side of what addiction does to a person,” she said.
