Since stepping down from their roles as working royals Prince Harry has been back to the U.K. for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, his grandparents’ funerals, a handful of court appearances, King Charles’ coronation, a very brief visit to see his father after the monarch was diagnosed with cancer, and an Invictus Games ceremony.

His wife, Meghan Markle, has made fewer trips back. She attended the Platinum Jubilee with the duke as well as the late queen’s funeral in 2022 but skipped the coronation in 2023 and the Invictus event in 2024. Several reports claim that the duchess will return to England for a major trip though planned in 2027.

However, some experts agree that if Meghan thinks the time between her visits will heal wounds with the royal family, she’s mistaken.

No chance the royals welcome Meghan with open arms and let bygones be bygones

Prince Harry will travel to Birmingham in 2027, as the city will play host to the Invictus Games that year. Royal watchers are under the assumption that the Suits star will accompany the prince, as she has always attended the Games with him since they’ve been together.

“There’s zero chance of Meghan missing the Invictus Games,” royal author Christopher Andersen said per OK! magazine. “She will be there briefly, but without Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.”

Royal expert Hilary Fordwich claimed that there’s a zero chance of something else happening when Meghan returns and that’s a reconciliation with her in-laws.

“Harry wrote that William called Meghan ‘difficult,’ ‘rude,’ and ‘abrasive’ all traits not appreciated by the British,” Fordwich noted, referring to the duke’s memoir Spare. “The royals have had zero reason to change their feelings regarding Meghan Markle.”

There was tension between Meghan and the rest of the family last time she was in the U.K.

Some may argue that there’s so much time between then and now, but no one has tried to reconcile their relationship over the past four years. And if the last time Meghan was gathered with the family is any indicator of how things will be when she returns in 2027, she likely won’t want to see any of Harry’s relatives.

The last time the Duchess of Sussex spent time in the U.K. was when Queen Elizabeth II died and the whole family attended events leading up to the late monarch’s state funeral. According to Daily Mail editor Rebecca English, no one could deny the tension between Meghan and the working senior royals.

“You could see that Camilla, Kate, and Sophie were together, and the body language was very comfortable between them,” English recalled. “But then there was Meghan, and you could have almost fitted somebody else in that space. It spoke volumes. Even if you didn’t know what we all know that has happened over the past few years, you’d have turned up and thought, ‘that looks a bit odd; there’s something slightly wrong here.’

“There was something self-consciously awkward about [Meghan’s] posture, demonstrating the depth of the rift between herself and the rest of the royal family even if you happened upon them without any prior knowledge of the acrimony of the past four years.”
