Blake Shelton Admitted His 1st Marriage Was ‘the Wrong Thing All Around’
Before Blake Shelton’s marriages to Miranda Lambert and Gwen Stefani, he was married to a woman from his hometown. They met as teenagers and were together through the earliest days of his career. While they were married, Shelton said they were a perfect match. After their divorce, however, Shelton no longer thought they’d been a good fit.
Blake Shelton said his first marriage wasn’t the right fit
Shelton married his first wife, Kaynette Williams, in 2003. They met as teenagers in Ada, Oklahoma, his hometown, and wed in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
“I knew Kaynette was the one,” he said shortly after their wedding (per Yahoo!). “Just because, I can’t explain it, I can’t say it’s because we get along or because of the way she looks. It’s just something I feel – you know what I mean? It’s nothing more than just knowing you’re right.”

The couple divorced in 2006. Upon reflection, Shelton said he didn’t think the marriage had been a good fit.
“Looking back, it was just the wrong thing all around,” he told Men’s Journal. “I married my buddy.”
Blake Shelton fell for Miranda Lambert during his first marriage
In 2005, while he was still married to his first wife, Shelton performed a duet with country singer Miranda Lambert at CMT’s 100 Greatest Duets event. Shelton said he felt a powerful pull towards Lambert during their performance.
“I’ve never had that kind of experience with anybody,” he said. “I was a married guy, you know? Standing up there and singing with somebody and going, ‘Man, this shouldn’t be happening.’ Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage.”
Shelton and Williams ended their marriage the following year, and he began a relationship with Lambert. This didn’t make life easy for Williams.
“After Blake and I split up, I moved from Tennessee back to Oklahoma,” she said in 2011. “But then Blake and Miranda moved back there to a neighboring town, and it just felt like Oklahoma wasn’t big enough for all of us.”
He is now with Gwen Stefani
Shelton and Lambert divorced in 2015. Shortly after they ended their relationship, Shelton jumped into a new romance with fellow Voice coach Gwen Stefani. At the time, she was also going through a divorce.
After nearly six years together, Stefani and Shelton tied the knot on their Oklahoma ranch in 2021. Shelton built a backyard chapel for the occasion, and a handful of their family and friends attended.

“They purposely kept the wedding simple,” a source close to the couple told People. “They didn’t want a circus. In the end, they just wanted to have this moment with their loved ones.”
They wanted the day to focus on their family and their faith.
“Their shared faith is very important,” the source said. “Having the wedding at home was a way for their families — and Gwen — to be as comfortable as possible. Blake wanted the day to be perfect for Gwen. His love for her is so deep.”
