Blake Shelton Admitted He’s Only Proud of a Tiny Fraction of the Songs He’s Written
Blake Shelton has released a number of hit songs, but he admitted that he doesn’t write many of these. While he said he’s written hundreds of songs in his lifetime, he only feels proud enough of a tiny portion of these. He shared why he prefers to use professional songwriters on his albums.
Blake Shelton said he hasn’t written many songs he feels proud of
Shelton has written a large catalog of music, but he’s only released a small portion of these songs. He said he doesn’t feel proud enough of most of his songs.
“If I’ve written 200 songs in my life or 300 songs, I probably have 15 of those that I’m proud of,” he told 60 Minutes in 2014. “That I truly go, man, I did something there.”

He believes a professional songwriter can almost always do a better job than he can.
“And I can’t imagine me convincing myself that I’m a better songwriter than some of these people in Nashville,” he said. “I just want the song to be the best song it can possibly be.”
He bonded with Gwen Stefani through writing
After Shelton’s divorce from Miranda Lambert, he grew close to fellow Voice judge Gwen Stefani. She was also going through a divorce, and worried about how quickly their relationship was developing.
“We had just met, and it was chaos. Both of our lives were in complete turmoil, all over the ground. Nothing could save us at that point,” Stefani told People. “There was a point where I was like, ‘I can’t even talk to you. This is insane. I already have enough problems. This is not happening anymore. We’re not going to text or nothing.’”
Still, Shelton asked Stefani if she would write a song with him.
“I think he really wanted to impress me, because he doesn’t really write songs as much as he used to. And I love writing songs,” she said. “That’s everything to me. If I want to feel like I have any kind of purpose or any kind of value or anything, it’s about writing a song. That’s where I get my fulfillment.”
The resulting song was “Go Ahead and Break My Heart.”
“He sent it to me, and it was a half-written song,” she recalled. “He was like, ‘Help me finish this.’ So I wrote him the verse back — the second verse on the song — and it’s just over text. That was our first song that we ever wrote together. We were never even in the same room, but we were writing a song to each other.”
Gwen Stefani wishes Blake Shelton would write more songs
Stefani wishes Shelton would write more music, whether with her or on his own.
“I wish he would write with me, but he doesn’t really write anymore,” Stefani said on The First One podcast (via AOL). “We’ve actually written three songs together — we wrote a Christmas song together, and then we wrote two other songs.”
She said writing is one of her greatest passions, and finds it disappointing that he isn’t as interested in it.
“But he just doesn’t like writing that much,” she said. “It makes me so mad.”
