In 2017, People Magazine named Blake Shelton the “Sexiest Man Alive.” The title got some pushback, and Shelton himself joked that he didn’t think he deserved it. After Gwen Stefani pushed him to accept it, though, he realized he had to embrace it. He joked that he felt ugly for much of his life, so it was a big change for him.

Blake Shelton joked that he had to make the most of his ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ title

Though Shelton said he didn’t necessarily agree that he was the Sexiest Man Alive, he felt he should make the most of the title. In his mind, it was the only time he could label himself as such.

“I mean, you know, you can’t be the Sexiest Man Alive unless you’re the Sexiest Man Alive,” he told Ellen DeGeneres (via E! News). “You know, I said this in the magazine — when I did my interview for Sexiest Man Alive — that I’d been fat and ugly my whole life, and if only for one year I get to be sexy, I’m going to milk this for everything that it’s worth.”

He joked that he didn’t think he could take it for granted.

“It’s going to be used in every conversation, whether it’s at The Voice, or at the feed in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, or in a conversation with a doctor,” he told People. “When [people] would say to Adam [Levine], ‘Mr. Sexy,’ you’d always see him go, ‘Well, awwww…’ If you say that to me, it’s going to be, ‘You’re damn right, I’m Mr. Sexy! I’ve been ugly my whole life, if I can be sexy for a year, I’m taking it. I’m taking it.”

Gwen Stefani encouraged Blake Shelton to accept the title

When Shelton first heard that People wanted to name him the Sexiest Man Alive, he joked that he thought the magazine must have run out of people to name.

“[I thought] that y’all must be running out of people,” he said. “Like, Wow, we’re down to somebody who is somewhat symmetrical.”

His then-girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, encouraged him to accept the title, though. She felt he’d grow to regret it if he didn’t.

“She goes, ‘Listen to me, you’re going to regret this for the rest of your life if you don’t take this gift and just live in the moment.’”

Adam Levine once campaigned for his friend

Shelton said he was most excited about his new title because it gave him something to hold over his fellow Voice coach, Adam Levine.

“I can’t wait to shove this up Adam’s a**,” Shelton said. “As proud as I am and honored that you guys asked me, that’s really the only thing I care about.”

Despite this, Levine had campaigned for Shelton in 2015.

“Listen, as far as I’m concerned, he is the Sexiest Man Alive,” Levine said. “People magazine doesn’t know all. They don’t know the Blake I know. If they did, he’d be on the cover.”

He predicted that it wouldn’t be long before Shelton got the title.

“I think he’s going to get it someday. I just think you’ve got to work hard at it, like I did. Just don’t get down. I know that it’s his No. 1 priority in life, so as long as he keeps working hard and being sexy-ish, like he kinda is with his thing, I think they’re going to come to him. They’re going to call him one day and be like, ‘Blake, you’re welcome. Here it is. You’re now the Sexiest Man Alive. Country or no country, this is your country.'”
