Blake Shelton Said the Idea of Divorcing Miranda Lambert Was ‘Outlandish’ Just Months Before They Split
Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert were country music royalty, but rumors of marital problems plagued their relationship. The couple brushed these off with humor, even saying they liked the attention the gossip brought them. In 2015, however, they showed that there may have been some truth to the stories when they divorced. Just months before they split, Shelton said he had zero plans to end his marriage.
Blake Shelton said he had no plans to divorce Miranda Lambert
Tabloids frequently reported on issues in Shelton and Lambert’s relationship. She said they were as happy as they could be.
“I’m not sunshine and roses. Blake’s the happiest person on the planet. He pulls me out of my darkness,” she told Marie Claire in 2015. “Literally everything is the best about being married.”
She looked forward to time away from work, when she could relax with Shelton.
“Now I make sure I spend good quality time with my husband, where it’s just us being normal. It’s like, ‘Let’s go back-roading today, just me and you,’” she said. “I think I’ve shown him I love really deeply.”
Shelton wished tabloids would find a new angle on their marriage beyond rumors of infidelity and divorce. At that point, he said the idea of separating felt improbable to him.
“At least come up with a new spin,” he said. “Go back to the baby stuff. There is a possibility she could be pregnant one day. Or I could be drunk in public. That could actually happen. But divorce, that’s outlandish to us.”
The couple announced their separation just months later
In July 2015, Shelton and Lambert surprised fans by announcing their separation. On the same day that they broke the news, they finalized their divorce.
“This is not the future we envisioned. And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately,” they said in a statement, per ABC News. “We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton released music about their split
Since their divorce, rumors have flown about the relationship between Shelton and Lambert. He quickly jumped into a relationship with Gwen Stefani, and she went on to marry Brendan McLoughlin. Neither has gone into great detail about why their marriage ended. According to Lambert, though, fans can get some insight through her music.
“[Tabloid coverage is] not nice sometimes,” she told CBS News. “But I think you got to take it with a grain of salt and know that, like, I’m a singer-songwriter, so luckily I can tell my whole truth. I will not lie in my music.”
While Shelton doesn’t write many of his own songs, he also dealt with his divorce on his album after the split. He didn’t go into great detail, though.
“It’s not like there’s all these juicy details [in the record],” he said on After MidNite. “But [country music] lends itself to emotions and things that you go through when you go through a divorce and, more so, the getting over that and moving on and finding someone else.”
