When Blake Shelton left The Voice, his career was in a much different place than it was when he joined the show. In his 23 seasons, Shelton became a nationally recognized star. Practically none of the show’s contestants can say the same. When Shelton left the show, he joked that he was the only star the show ever made.

Blake Shelton joked that he was the only star to come out of ‘The Voice’

While Shelton had seen success as a country singer before joining The Voice, his tenure on the show lifted him to a new realm of success. He’s now a household name.

“It changed the path of my career. When I came on as a coach on this show, everything in my life was turned upside down,” Shelton said on the Today Show (via Rolling Stone). “And in a good way, you know? This has been incredible, but it’s time, you know. It’s time for not even what’s next. A little bit of nothing would be nice.”

He joked that he was “the only star they ever found” on the show. While he found stardom on the show, very few of the contestants have maintained a successful singing career after leaving.

“It is what it is, America!” he said.

Blake Shelton’s wife, Gwen Stefani, acknowledged the low success rate of ‘The Voice’ contestants

Gwen Stefani, whom Shelton met on the show, also acknowledged the challenge that contestants face after they leave The Voice.

“The winners have all been remarkable performers with amazing voices, but the music world is so complex. It’s tough to break through,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “The benefit of this show is that audiences love to watch ordinary people have the national opportunity to showcase their talent. As a culture, we’re constantly rooting for the underdog, so that’s the real appeal of the show.”

She said the music industry is a difficult place to find one’s footing. Her time on the show has only made her more grateful that she was able to find success.

“I watched people that went through that without seeing their faces, without knowing what color they are,” she told Paper Magazine. “And I chose the ones that pulled my heartstrings. And even though they were so talented, none of them have had careers. It’s made me look at myself and even feel even more amazed by the fact that anyone cared or cares.”

The show reportedly has little interest in finding pop stars

While The Voice originally sought to make stars in the way shows like American Idol have been able to, they reportedly have moved away from this goal. Now, they want to showcase the coaches over the contestants.

The Voice has more in common with pro wrestling than a legitimate talent competition at this point,” an insider told the US Sun. “It’s about seeing famous personalities from back in the day mix it up and show unexpected sides of themselves. It’s a little sad that it’s not a place to see future pop stars anymore.”
