D’Angelo was born Michael Eugene Archer on Feb. 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia. His father was a preacher, and therefore he grew up listening to gospel music. He developed an appreciation for music at a young age and began playing the piano. By the time he was a teenager, he was performing during amateur nights with his band, Michael Archer and Precise. They eventually earned recognition when they performed at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

When he was 18, D’Angelo dropped out of school and moved to New York to pursue music full-time. He released his debut album, Brown Sugar, in 1995. He followed that up with his second album, Voodoo, in 2000, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It included the hit track “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” D’Angelo also collaborated with several other giants in the business including Lauryn Hill for her song “Nothing Even Matters.”

At the time of his death, D’Angelo had an estimated net worth of $1 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

The Grammy winner began a relationship with fellow R&B star Angie Stone in the ’90s and they had one son, Michael. In March 2025, Stone was killed in a car crash near Montgomery, Alabama.

In addition to Michael, D’Angelo is survived by two other children—a daughter, Imani, born in 1999, and a son, Morocco, born in 2010.
