The gloves are coming off. Jessica Simpson’s soon-to-be ex-husband, Eric Johnson, is reportedly “ready to fight back.” Why? Because the former NFL player is convinced her new song is about him. And he’s got “plenty” to say if she “wants to play dirty” as their divorce proceedings get underway.

Jessica Simpson sings about ‘unholy matrimony’ in her new song ‘Leave’

Simpson dropped new music for the first time in years on March 7, 2025, with “Leave.” The break-up track is part of Simpson’s new EP, “Nashville Canyon: Part I,” which debuted on March 21, 2025.

In the song, the Newlyweds alum doesn’t mention Johnson by name. She does, however, sing about “unholy matrimony” and going from “magic” to “tragic” with her partner. The Jessica Simpson Collection founder also hints at her partner being with someone else. This comes after a report that Simpson and Johnson, who got married in 2014, had trust issues, among other problems as a couple

Simpson’s new music comes just two months after her divorce announcement. In January 2025, she revealed that she and Johnson were “living separately navigating a painful situation” in their marriage. The announcement came after months of divorce rumors. Simpson and Johnson share three children: Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5.

Johnson is considering writing a tell-all memoir about Simpson

Simpson’s soon-to-be ex-husband might add “author” to his résumé soon. All because Johnson thinks she’s taking swipes at him through her music. “When they split up, Eric was led to believe that they were still on the same team,” an insider told Radar Online

“He bent over backward to make things as smooth as he could, not just for their kids but for Jess, too,” they explained. “So to suddenly have her blindside him like this has been a huge blow.”

Simpson’s diss track is “pushing” Johnson, who is “furious” about the song, to write a tell-all, an idea he’s been thinking about. “Eric went through so much in their marriage, and a lot of his friends have encouraged him to write a memoir to share his side of the story.”

“It’s something he was considering,” the insider said. “But now that she’s come after him like this, it’s looking more likely to happen. If she wants to play dirty, there’s plenty he can air, too.”

“He’s ready to fight back, and he’s got plenty of ammunition to use against her,” they added.

Jessica’s not concerned with how her new song might impact divorce proceedings

The insider also shared that Simpson is in “self-sabotage mode” amid her and Johnson’s split. Furthermore, she “doesn’t seem to care about the consequences,” whatever they might be, of her new song.

“She’s so consumed with her own side of things and her own pain that she’s not thinking of the bigger picture,” the source said. What about her ex? He’s not going to let Simpson’s diss track go. “Eric’s not going to take this lying down. And, unfortunately, that means things between them are about to go nuclear.”
