Actor Gabrielle Union and her NBA hubby Dwyane Wade first met in 2007, and while they went through some trials and tribulations as a couple, they ultimately knew they wanted to be married. After a brief 2013 split that truly tested the strength of their love for one another, Wade proposed to Union.

Today, they’re happy and strong, but Union wasn’t about to go into the marriage without a prenup. And she once revealed that a past experience taught her how to properly handle her money.

Gabrielle Union refused to marry Dwyane Wade without a prenup

Union and Wade first met at a Super Bowl party back in 2007, and she didn’t initially want to give him a change; he is nine years younger than her and was going through a divorce at the time, so she has said in the past that she kind of overlooked him. But ultimately, she gave him a chance, and the two started dating in 2009. They went through some serious difficulties in 2013 when they took a break and Wade wound up having a baby with another woman, but ultimately, they worked it out. And while it might have been true love, Union once revealed that she refused to marry Wade without a prenup.

“I don’t ever want anyone to hold money over me,” Union said on Jay Williams’ “The Limits” podcast in 2022. “I asked for a prenup with D because I didn’t have one in my first marriage. And I had to write a big a** check. And I was like, no, no. No, thank you, because I don’t ever want money to be the thing that controls me.”

Union also said that she understands she is “wildly privileged” and married to a “pretty wealthy man,” but none of that stopped her from protecting herself before they wed.

When Union and Wade split in 2013 for a short time, he had a brief relationship with another woman — and Wade got her pregnant. That was incredibly hard for Union to accept, and she and Wade struggled to move past it. In her 2021 memoir, “You Got Anything Stronger?” Union revealed the devastation she felt when Wade told her he was going to be a father to another woman’s baby.

“The advice I would give myself now would be to leave,” Union wrote in her book. “‘You don’t have to do this. You don’t think you have an option, but you do. Save yourself.’” Of course, she and Wade do seem to have a happy marriage, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been through their share of difficulties.
