Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have been together for well over a decade; the couple first met in 2007, began dating in 2009, and tied the knot in 2014. The two have each built businesses, been voices for social justice, and, in addition to that, have become parents — all while Union maintained an acting career and Wade maintained his professional basketball career.

Despite both having so much on their plates, Union can’t help but notice that there is one question interviewers seemingly never ask Wade — even though Union gets asked the question all the time.

Gabrielle Union says nobody ever asks Dwyane Wade about ‘balance’

During an interview with Jay Williams’ “The Limits” podcast, Union opened up about the concept of balance in one’s life, plus why she stopped holding herself to a certain standard of balance. And while doing it, she revealed that the only people who ever get asked about balance are women.

“In the NBA, you got to talk to reporters literally every single day,” Union told Williams. “This man [Dwyane Wade] got full custody, as a single Black man playing in the NBA, of two young children, had multiple businesses, entrepreneur, philanthropist, you know, community leader — all of these things. Has a huge life — huge, huge life. And at no point did anyone ever ask him or expect him to have balance. He was literally never asked.”

Union brought up a strong point. “I realized all that they expect of men is to be good at one job and to make sure that the check clears … With women, it’s like, ugh, how do you balance being a mother, a wife, a businesswoman, you know?”

Union said she ultimately threw away the idea that she needed to have balance. “It’s over. It’s a trap.”

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade bond over watching TV

Union and Wade have plenty of ways to keep the spark in their marriage, but Union told Sherri Shepherd that she and Wade love sitting down to watch television together — an easy way to reconnect.

“We don’t mess around with our TV time,” Union revealed. She also said that My Lottery Dream Home is the couple’s show of choice, which is on HGTV. It sees lottery winners buying homes they weren’t able to afford before. Union said that she and Wade look forward to watching the show, which has a new episode every Friday night.
