Grief-Stricken: Princess Diana’s Ex-Lover Speaks on How She’d Feel About Prince William, Prince Harry Feud
Princess Diana‘s ex-lover, James Hewitt, has shared his thoughts on how she would have reacted to Prince William and Prince Harry’s ongoing feud. Diana always emphasized the importance of family unity, raising her sons to support one another. Would their fractured relationship be different if she were still alive?
Princess Diana would be grief-stricken over her sons’ fallout
James Hewitt, Princess Diana’s ex-lover, spoke about Prince Harry and Prince William’s estrangement during an interview with Good Morning Britain (per Express). Hewitt shared his thoughts on how Diana would feel about her sons’ split.
Hewitt and the late Princess of Wales secretly dated for five years. He believes that she would have tried to unite her estranged adult sons to the best of her ability.
“I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift. She’d do her best to try and get them together,” Hewitt declared.
Prince Harry and Prince William’s estrangement began in 2016 when William expressed concerns to Prince Harry about the swiftness at which his relationship with Meghan Markle was moving. Their rift deepened after Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping down from royal duties in 2020.
How well did James Hewitt know Princess Diana?

James Hewitt is a former British Army officer, who became well-known for his romantic relationship with Princess Diana. The two met in 1986 at a party when Hewitt was serving in the Household Cavalry.
At the time of the affair, Diana was married to Prince Charles. However, she and Hewitt began a relationship that lasted for about five years.
Diana admitted to the affair in a 1995 interview with BBC’s Panorama. Of Hewitt, Diana said, “Yes, I adored him. Yes, I was in love with him.” Their affair reportedly ended after Hewitt was deployed to serve in the Gulf War.
A royal expert agrees that Diana would want to see her sons reunited
Royal expert Ingrid Seward made the same assumption to The Sun in September 2024. She agreed that Diana would have done everything possible to reunite her children.
Seward said, “The life that Harry has in America, with a wife and family, away from the royal world, is exactly what Diana wanted herself. She would be very proud of Harry that he was able to get this life.”
“I think what would really upset Diana was the fact that Harry is estranged from his brother and his father. Diana was very anxious to always keep the family together,” the royal expert continued.
“She would be angry at them for allowing it to get this far,” Seward concluded. “And she would be upset and tell them they’ve got to mend it. If Diana was around this probably would have never happened.”
Prince William and Prince Harry reportedly remain estranged. They last made a public appearance together for a walkabout after Queen Elizabeth’s death.
