Kate Middleton’s Old School Is Still the ‘Top’ Choice for Prince George, Expert Says
Walking in Kate Middleton’s footsteps at school is the “top” choice for Prince George. A royal expert says the 11-year-old British royal is most likely to attend the Princess of Wales’s old school when he goes to boarding school.
Reports of where Prince George might attend boarding school have been mixed
George is currently a student at Lambrook School. But where he’s off to for boarding school has been a much-discussed topic in recent years. Previous reports claimed “a lot of tension” brewed between Prince William and Kate amid private discussions about where to send George to boarding school.
Some reports claimed the Prince of Wales has prevailed, with his oldest child and heir bound for his own alma mater, Eton College. That option is said to leave Kate “heartbroken.” Just months later, reports surfaced that Kate had actually gotten the “final say” in the matter, preferring to send George to a coeducational school instead of an all-boys school like Eton.
Kate’s old school, Marlborough College, remains the ‘top’ choice for him
Amid the ongoing public discussion about where William and Kate will send George to school as he gets older, the future queen’s alma mater is still the frontrunner, according to royal expert Ingrid Seward.
Kate attended Marlborough College, a coeducational boarding school in Wiltshire, England, as a teenager from 1996 to 2000. She started classes there at 14 after experiencing bullying at her previous school, Downe House. Kate then went on to the University of St. Andrew’s, where she famously met William.
“I still think Marlborough would be the top,” Seward said (via Newsweek). The reason, she explained, involves George’s siblings, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, and security. “All three children could go there,” she said. “And then they’re not such a burden on the taxpayer due to the security that has to be with them all the time.”
That means George, Charlotte, and Louis could end up walking the same halls as they are now as students at Lambrook. “I think he’ll go to Marlborough. It’s coed, and that’s where Kate was, that’s where Pippa was, that’s where James was,” she said in reference to Kate’s siblings (and George’s aunt and uncle).
The royal biographer also pointed out that Marlborough is relatively close to the Wales family home, Adelaide Cottage. “It’s not a million miles from where they are, and it’s the freedom,” Seward said. “If all the three kids are at the same school, that cuts the burden of security.”
London schools are less likely for George
While George going to school in London is certainly possible, it’s unlikely, according to Seward. Despite reports circulating in January and February 2025 that Kate visited University College School and Highgate, the royal expert doesn’t think either of the North London schools will eventually have George as a student.
“I would be so surprised if they put him in a London school,” Seward said. “Boys just need space, and London schools, however wonderful they may be, you do not get that freedom.” Additionally, George would be easily recognized walking through the busy streets of London. That’s less likely to happen if he goes to a more out-of-the-way school.
William and Kate moved their family from London to Windsor, England, in 2022. Kate has since said they relocated for more “green space” (via Express). However, Apartment 1A is still their official London residence.
However, both of the aforementioned schools aren’t boarding schools, which would be a plus for George’s mom. “Kate is probably worried about him boarding,” Seward said. Nevertheless, the expert would still “be absolutely stunned if he went to a London day school.”
Until George goes to boarding school, he continues going to school with Charlotte and Louis.
