It’s been more than five years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to leave the U.K. and royal life behind in order to move to America and “carve out new paths” together. The Sussexes’ decision to step down as working royals was shocking not only for fans around the world but also to several members of the prince’s family who were reportedly blindsided by the news.

And while it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Harry and Meghan in the U.S., the duke has insisted that he is happy with his new life in his new home. However, a former royal employee isn’t buying that entirely and believes Harry is regretful about one thing in particular.

How different things would have been if Prince Harry and Meghan were still working royals

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler for seven years. During his time working for the now-monarch, his duties included that of valet, housekeeper, house manager, and driver as well. Harrold also looked after Prince William and Prince Harry whenever the brothers were staying at Highgrove House.

Harrold recently talked about how no one could have predicted that things would go the way they did and how if Harry and Meghan had stayed in the U.K. we’d likely see the Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales attending engagements together.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, Harrold said: “I think the royal family are coping without Harry and Meghan. It’s now a very different royal family to what we thought it would be when Meghan first married Harry in 2018. If they had stayed in the royal family, things would have been so different, and perhaps we would have seen Catherine and Meghan doing more events together.

“But Harry and Meghan had to regroup and go in another direction, and just like any family, they’re getting on with things. It’s difficult to say whether the royal family are better off without Harry and Meghan. I think Harry and Meghan would have been a huge asset, and the workload would’ve been spread out more. But Harry and Meghan wanted their own careers and to do interviews and shows with Netflix, so it just wouldn’t have worked with them staying in the family.”

Harrold also believes that the duke has some “regrets” and thinks the thing that’s upset Harry the most after leaving is everything he has had to give up when he chose to step down.

The former royal butler opined: “There’s part of me that thinks Harry does have some regrets about the fact that he’s left his home life, his friends, and his family behind to start a new life in the U.S. It was a big move with a lot of sacrifice.

“For Meghan, she still had her friends and, to an extent, her family in the form of her mom, so she didn’t have to make as huge a sacrifice. But I’m a huge believer in fate and things happen for a reason.”
