Prince William and Kate Middleton Have No ‘Tactic’ When It Comes to Talking About Their Kids
There’s no strategy behind Prince William and Kate Middleton talking about their kids. A royal author says the Prince and Princess of Wales’s affinity for sharing “sweet” stories about their children is just evidence of their parenting.
William and Kate have three children: George, Charlotte, and Louis
The Prince and Princess of Wales are parents of three kids. Their oldest is 11-year-old Prince George. William and Kate welcomed him in July 2013, a little more than two years after their royal wedding.
Next up is Princess Charlotte, 9, the couple’s only daughter. She joined the Wales family in May 2015. Finally, there’s Prince Louis, who, at the time of writing, is just weeks away from turning 7.
William and Kate keep George, Charlotte, and Louis largely out of the public eye, save for the occasional appearance. Think: major holidays such as Christmas and Easter or big royal family events. The kids all go to school together at Lambrook School near Adelaide Cottage, the Wales family’s home in Windsor, England.
Talking about their kids is reflective of William and Kate being ‘involved and affectionate parents’
Royal author Gareth Russell told GB News that William and Kate’s shift from the more “formal” ways of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III by sharing “sweet” anecdotes about George, Charlotte, and Louis is likely the result of their parenting style.
“I don’t think there’s any tactic behind it. I think it’s genuinely that the Prince and Princess of Wales are involved and affectionate parents,” Russell said. “All of those stories that they tell are clearly being told by involved and loving parents. And sometimes they’re quite funny, and sometimes they’re quite sweet.”
“It’s just more common today to share these kinds of anecdotes publicly,” the author continued. “Whereas maybe 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago, things were just generally more formal.” While his father and grandmother might’ve kept their family lives more private, William “wants to do things a little bit differently.”
“I think it’s quite a natural development, and also, it shows how comfortable William and Catherine are in conversation with people,” Russell concluded.
What William and Kate have said about their kids lately
The future king and queen don’t talk about George, Charlotte, and Louis every time they step out publicly. Instead, they’re more prone to mention one—or two or all—of their kids only occasionally.
Most recently, William passed along a message from George to reality TV star Kaleb Cooper. During a March 26, 2025, visit to a farm in Pensford, England, William told the Clarkson’s Farm star what George said about him.
“You’ve got George watching now,” William told Cooper. “I said to him, ‘What shall I say if I meet Kaleb?’” George’s answer: “Tell Kaleb to mind his language.”
Back in December 2024, cameras captured Kate telling one of her Christmas carol concert guests about the secret Louis kept from Charlotte about the event. “Louis knew about the [Royal Ballet] dancers and was talking about them over tea,” Kate could be seen telling singer Paloma Faith.
“I said, ‘Louis, can you keep a secret? Because I want it to be a surprise for Charlotte, who loves her ballet,’” she continued. “And he said ‘Promise, promise I won’t say anything.’”
Kate added that Louis “kept the secret” for nearly two weeks.
