This Is How Queen Camilla Showed ‘Rebellion’ the Day She Married King Charles
King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s (formerly known as Camilla Parker Bowles) love story doesn’t mirror a fairy tale. After dating in the 70’s, the two went on to marry other people but engaged in a not-so-secret extramarital affair for years.
After Princess Diana died, Charles’ mistress became public enemy No. 1 as many people blamed the breakdown of their marriage solely on her. However, eight years after his first wife’s death and when those public perceptions seemed to cool a bit, the future king asked Camilla to marry him.
They tied the knot on April 9, 2005, but to this day, something about what Camilla wore for her wedding has raised questions, as did what another family member sported that day.
Here’s more on that and why an expert says Camilla may have been showing some “rebellion” with her choice.
Expert shares what Queen Camilla wore that showed ‘quiet rebellion’
The pair’s wedding was far from traditional for a few reasons including what they wore, says fashion editor and stylist Lauren Bulla.
Speaking on behalf of Spin Genie, she explained: “The wedding attire was pretty non-traditional, likely for multiple reasons. One being the amount of public scrutiny their relationship and the wedding had received. The fashion choices from both of them set the tone for the ceremony as a whole, this was never going to be your typical royal wedding.
“Because of the nature of the event the royal couple were afforded a bit more creativity in their outfit choices. I’m sure there was an element of them wanting their relationship to exist externally from all the red tape, expectations, and standards surrounding royal partnerships.”
Bulla added: “What they were doing was wholly non-traditional, I think a big part of the choice was down to individual taste but also maybe some sort of quiet rebellion as a result of the work they had to put in to be seen as a valid couple.
“I think the outfits themselves were stunning, they were beautiful silhouettes and there was a playfulness in the patterns and colours chosen. It was really standalone and was representative of their non-traditional take on the whole event and plays into the fact that their relationship was never going to pan out as society would expect it to.”
Another royal made headlines for their outfit choice on the day of the wedding as well
But it was just Camilla whose outfit choice had people talking, it was also what her mother-in-law wore that raised eyebrows too.
After granting her son permission to marry Camilla, Queen Elizabeth II announced that she would not be attending the couple’s civil wedding ceremony, choosing her faith as head of the Church of England over family. The late monarch did, however, attend the marriage blessing afterwards at St. George’s Chapel. But when she walked out of the church, the crowds and members of the press were stunned to see her instead of the bride wearing white.
Queen Elizabeth never spoke about her decision to wear that color, which she hasn’t worn to any other royal wedding, but there have been plenty of theories.
According to Hello! magazine, the queen decided to go with white rather than her usual bold color choices she donned for most weddings because Camilla was wearing a pale blue dress, not the traditional white and the queen didn’t want to clash with the bride’s ensemble.
Others claimed that she chose white as a sort of payback for the long-told story that Camilla wore white to Charles and Diana’s wedding. Only problem with that theory is that the late Princess of Wales herself told biographer Andrew Morton that she spotted Camilla at her wedding wearing gray.
