Queen Elizabeth’s Very Different Reactions to Princess Diana and Charles’ Wedding Compared to Charles and Camilla’s Wedding Caught on Camera
Many people who were around at the time still remember when Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles got married. The event, which was dubbed the “Wedding of the Century,” took place on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and was broadcast all around the world, bringing in a global audience of around 750 million.
Charles’ wedding to his second wife (formerly known as Camilla Parker Bowles) wasn’t billed as that grand of an affair as it wasn’t the first marriage for either of them. However, it was still considered a major event as the heir to the British throne was marrying the woman he had loved for many years. But some wondered what Queen Elizabeth II really thought about her oldest son and the future king marrying his mistress.
While she gave the green light for the marriage to take place, she chose not attend the civil ceremony. That’s because as the head of the Church of England, the late monarch did not feel it was appropriate for her to attend the civil wedding of two people who had been divorced. She did, however, attend the Service of Prayer and Dedication at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle later that day.
Now though a clip showing the queen at both weddings is making the rounds and her demeanor looks quite different at each event.
Queen Elizabeth smiling happily at one wedding and looking disinterested at another
In the video, which was posted on TikTok, two still photos of Queen Elizabeth at the weddings flash while “Tag, You’re It” by Melanie Martinez plays over the images.
The first shows the queen smiling wide and laughing with Princess Diana on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following her wedding to Charles. The second image shows her walking out of St. George’s Chapel after Charles and Camilla’s wedding looking off in the distance and appearing almost disinterested.
The video has more than 1.4 million views, over 148,000 likes, and hundreds of comments. Some are convinced that the clip proves King Charles’ mother was delighted after his first wedding, but wasn’t thrilled when her son married his second wife.
As a person wrote: “And here we can see who [the] queen really loved.”
Camilla and Charles’ love story has spanned more than half a century
While Camilla and Charles don’t have a perfect love story, there’s no evidence that Queen Elizabeth didn’t accept her over the years, just like the British public did. And by all accounts, no matter how she looked outside after the service, she was happy for the couple who first met in the 1970s and were married more than 20 years ago.
In an interview on their anniversary, Queen Camilla spoke about what the secret is to a happy marriage.
“Twenty years, who could believe it was 20 years? What is the secret? I don’t know, well I suppose it’s just sort of friendship, really,” Camilla said per Hello! “Laughing at the same things, getting on with life … We are always going in different directions, like ships that pass in the night really. We whizz past each other. In fact, we have got a bit of a catch-up this afternoon.”
