The royal family has a few traditions when it comes to celebrating the Easter holiday. One is leading up to the day with Maundy Thursday, a service the monarch attends, and another is how they celebrate Easter Sunday which is as big a celebration as Christmas for the family.

After attending Easter church services, the family gathers together to enjoy a lunch of roast lamb. The royals also remember those who work for them throughout the year and on that day, to make it go smoothly.

Here’s more on that and what one of King Charles‘ former employees says his boss gave him for Easter.

King Charles was thinking about his mother, Queen Elizabeth, during the Maundy service

Darren Stanton is a body language and behavioral expert with a degree in psychology. He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.” He’s been analyzing the body language of royal family members for years as well.

Stanton observed King Charles looking a bit sad during the service and attributed that to missing his mother.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Slots, the expert said: “The Maundy service is a very important and poignant occasion in the royal calendar for the king, as the late Queen Elizabeth would always attend. It definitely holds a special place in his heart, so when we saw Charles and Camilla arrive, I noticed that Charles appeared to be solemn. He was still in good spirits and feeling confident, as we saw him smiling and holding his head up high with his shoulders back, but there was an element of sadness and reflection.

“We can see this through his facial expressions and his eye contact. When he was outside the church, we see him looking upwards, and this can show that he is reflecting and thinking about the late queen. It’s a sadness microexpression, as his eyebrows are pointing down, which tells us he is internalizing feelings of sadness here.”

And what do the royals give their employees for the holiday?

According to Grant Harrold, who was King Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011, the presents included handwritten letters and Cadbury’s mini eggs.

Speaking on behalf of  Spin Genie, Harrold shared: “My Easter was great with the family because I was given easter eggs by the king and queen; it was a disaster for my weight. The king and queen, when they were the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, absolutely used to give me Easter gifts, Easter eggs.

“I remember one year the king actually wrote me a little letter and he thanked me for spending my Easter with them. It was my first Easter with them, and he put Cadbury’s mini eggs in the envelopes, so when I opened the envelope, all those sweets fell out. It was so sweet. I gave him a little metal tin. When you opened it there was a little wind-up chicken that he wound up and had it run across the table between him and the queen. It was quite sweet, very cute.”
