Russell Brand Said He Was ‘Very Happy’ With His Life Directly After Katy Perry Divorce
Russell Brand and Katy Perry had a whirlwind romance that overtook the celebrity world. The couple met in 2008 and dated for only four months before their engagement in 2010. By December 2011, Perry and Brand officially called off their romance and proceeded with divorce proceedings. Here’s what Brand said just days after finalizing his divorce from Perry.
Russell Brand admitted that he was ‘very happy’ with other aspects of his life after finalizing his divorce from Katy Perry
Russell Brand and Katy Perry had a short-lived romance that started when Perry had a cameo in Get Him to the Greek. By 2009, they were spotted making out at the MTV VMAs afterparty, and Perry seemed to confirm the romance rumors by November 2009. The couple was officially engaged by January 2010, with both Brand and Perry acting over the moon with their love. They had a traditional Hindu ceremony in India to tie the knot in October 2010.
Unfortunately, their whirlwind romance didn’t last long. Split rumors plagued the couple in mid-2011. While Perry fended off the rumor mill, Brand announced his separation from Perry in December 2011.
Later, Perry discussed how she felt her ex-husband was intimidated by her successful career. “At first when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, ‘I can’t handle the equalness,'” she told Vogue. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour.”
In 2012, Brand talked to Piers Morgan on CNN about his divorce from Perry. Brand and Perry had just finalized their split at the time. “I think what happened over the weekend was just an administrative finality,” he said. “I don’t think that makes very much difference. Of course, I still feel great feelings of compassion and warmth for Katy. But, I’m very happy with my life.”
Brand went on to excitedly explain how he only visits reality “temporarily.”
Katy Perry explained how she had a ‘fairytale’ illusion of her first marriage
Katy Perry discussed relationships in her Part of Me documentary. In one segment, she discusses the complications of her romantic life. Perry alludes that Russell Brand didn’t accept or support her in her career endeavors.
“I would, you know, be out and about and I would hear girls, or actresses, or musicians, or whatever, they would say, ‘Oh, no, I don’t want to be in a relationship, because I don’t want to have to choose between being in a relationship and having a career,'” Perry explained in the documentary. “And I thought to myself, ‘Well, when I find that person that’s gonna be my life partner, I won’t ever have to choose. Because they’ll be accepting of me for completely who I am.'”
“They won’t be threatened or have weird motives,” she continued. “They will be accepting of me, the things I love, the ambition, what I aspire to be, what I want to create. They’ll be accepting and supportive. And then I started to realize, ‘Oh my God, that’s not true. That fairytale that I had is not true for me right now.'”
While Perry understood these hard truths, she still cried when thinking about how she missed her ex.
Russell Brand opened up about his famous ex-wife the day before news broke that he was charged with rape and sexual assault
Russell Brand has been charged with rape and multiple counts of assault in 2025. The day before the charges hit the media, Brand opened up about the end of his marriage to Katy Perry.
“What can I tell you is, when I was married to Katy Perry, she’s like, not entirely normal, because she’s an extraordinary, massive star — but she’s not weird or off-key,” he said on the Stay Free with Russell Brand podcast on April 3. “And wasn’t involved in anything nefarious, as far as I could tell.”
“The reasons that a marriage didn’t work are the normal human reasons [why] marriages don’t work, and I have nothing but respect for her,” he continued.
Brand noted that he disagrees with Perry’s politics. However, he doesn’t fully agree with his current wife’s political views, either. “So, you know, you always disagree with people, don’t ya?” he explained.
