Selena Gomez Said Taylor Swift ‘Cares so Much’ About What Other People Think of Her
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have been friends for years. The pair bonded when they were both teenagers in the entertainment industry, and their friendship has been going strong ever since. As Swift grew older and more famous, the press coverage about her changed. Gomez said it hurt her friend deeply to have anyone view her in a negative light.
Selena Gomez said Taylor Swift is very sensitive
When Swift was a young singer in Nashville, the press coverage about her was largely positive. This changed as she entered her twenties. She admitted it wasn’t easy for her to see negative coverage about herself.
“I just gotta take it day by day,” she told Rolling Stone. “I don’t think anyone is ever truly viewed as only one thing, as only good, as only well-behaved, as only respectful. In the beginning, when there would be a tiny news story about something that wasn’t true, I thought that meant my fans weren’t gonna show up to my next concert. But now, knock on wood – where’s wood? I need to knock on wood – I feel like my fans have my back and I have theirs.”
Gomez recalled a time when they realized someone was listening in on their conversation at a restaurant. Swift seemed terrified that this would color their judgment of her.
“She got startled that they were listening,” Gomez said, “and she got nervous, and then the person left and she felt awful. She was like, ‘I hope he didn’t leave because of me. I hope he doesn’t think I’m mean. Do you think he’s going to tell everyone I’m mean?’ She cares so much.”
She said it hurt to read bad things about herself
One of Swift’s most painful early experiences with the press came after she sang “Rhiannon” at the Grammys with Stevie Nicks. Swift was, admittedly, off-key, and the public reacted viciously. One reviewer said she’d killed her career in the minutes it took to sing the song.
“The things that were said about me by this dude, just floored me and like leveled me,” she told 60 Minutes. “And I don’t have thick skin. I hate reading criticisms. Like you never — you never really like get past things hurting you.”
She wrote the song “Mean” about the experience.
Taylor Swift has reportedly claimed a spot in Selena Gomez’s wedding party
Gomez and Swift are still close friends. Swift jokingly requested a role in Gomez’s upcoming wedding to producer Benny Blanco. When she announced her engagement on Instagram, Swift made her desire to be involved clear in the comments.
“Yes I will be the flower girl,” she wrote in a comment on Gomez’s Instagram post.
At this point, though, Swift will have to wait to receive a role. The couple are trying to enjoy their engagement before they jump into planning their wedding.
“I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head,” Blanco told Rolling Stone. “We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’-type of people. We’re still not over this moment. Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.”
