Taylor Swift began to focus on songwriting when she realized she needed to set herself apart to get a record deal. Before long, the art form became incredibly important to her. She got her foot in the door in Nashville because of her writing, and she could use it to channel her emotions. While writing brought a great deal of good to her, she joked that it might not be good for her love life.

Taylor Swift used songwriting to channel her emotions

Even before she had much experience with romantic relationships, Swift said she loved the idea of love.

“I’m fascinated by love rather than the principle of ‘Oh, does this guy like me?’” she told Rolling Stone, adding, “I love love. I love studying it and watching it. I love thinking about how we treat each other, and the crazy way that one person can feel one thing and another can feel totally different.”

When she did begin dating, she wrote about her relationships and heartbreaks as a way to process her emotions.

“It just doesn’t take much for me to be inspired to write a song about a person, but I’m much more likely to write that song than do anything about it,” she said. “You know, self-preservation.”

Taylor Swift joked that songwriting might not be good for her love life

As a teenager, Swift said she didn’t feel like she needed a boy in her life. She trusted that love would find her, eventually, though she joked that writing about her romantic partners might not help her prospects.

“I’ve never been the kind of girl who needs a boyfriend,” she wrote on her MySpace page, per the Washington Post. “I believe that love will find you when you’re not looking for it. So I’ve been actively NOT looking for it for about 3 years now. I’ll let you know how that works out for me. It probably doesn’t help that I write songs about every guy I talk to.”

She added that fame wouldn’t make things easy either.

“I have to pick a guy who’s really nice,” she said. “I’ve got 2 million fans who are going to tell me if they don’t approve of him, you know? That’s sort of why I’m single. I don’t want to have to find the right guy right now. I’m fascinated by my career and I’m not too fascinated by guys right now. I know that’ll change and someday I’ll have a great relationship, or a whatever relationship. But right now isn’t the time for that.”

She said she was far more focused on her music than her love life

Ultimately, music was the most important thing in Swift’s life.

“My friends are like: ‘Oooh, look at him, he’s cute.’ But I have these blinders on …” she said. “It’s not like I’m running out of time or whatever. But music is my boyfriend.”

She could still write about love even if she wasn’t in a relationship.

“I sometimes write about teenage love, but I am presently a fourteen-year-old girl without a boyfriend,” she told Vanity Fair. “Sometimes I worry that I must be wearing some kind of guy repellent, but then I realize that I’m just discovering who I am as a person. Right now, music is the most important thing in my life, and I want to touch people with my songs.”
