Taylor Swift Said John Mayer Probably Saw Her as a ‘Stalker’ Based on How She Acted When They Met
In 2008, Taylor Swift met John Mayer at the Met Gala. They would go on to date but, at the time, Swift was just a major fan of Mayer’s. She said she felt overwhelmingly starstruck when she met him, causing her to behave in a way that, she joked, would likely make him see her as a “stalker.”
Taylor Swift joked John Mayer might have seen her as a ‘stalker’
Though Swift was already a big star in her own right by 2008, she felt in awe when she met Mayer.
“I was starstruck by the fact that he came up and introduced himself to me,” she said, per People. “I was like freaking out!”
Swift was such a fan of Mayer that she read his blog. She could even quote it back to him.
“I just respect him so much, I was rattling off quotes that he said in his blog, and he was probably like thinking that I’m a stalker,” she said. “But he was amazing and sweet.”
Swift said she took it as a huge compliment that Mayer knew who she was at all.
“I was like, ‘what, you know my name?’” she said. “I’m such a fan of his writing and everything so it was really cool to get to meet one of my heroes.”
Taylor Swift and John Mayer went on to date
Several months after they met, Mayer tweeted that he wanted to collaborate with Swift on a song called “Half of My Heart.” Swift later said it was her dream to collaborate with him.
“He Twittered the other day that he wrote a song and he wants to make it a duet with me,” she told Elle. “I freaked out when I heard, because I’ve been such a big fan of John for such a long time. I’m really excited about just the idea that he would even mention me in his Twitter!”
They went on to perform together and, eventually, release the song. By the end of 2009, fans began to suspect they were a couple.
In early 2010, Swift and Mayer were spotted out in Nashville together, further fueling romance rumors. After just several months, though, their relationship appeared to have fizzled out.
What songs did she write about him?
Fans have interpreted a number of Swift’s songs to be about her relationship with Mayer, including “The Story of Us,” “Ours,” “Superman,” and “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve.” The most obvious seems to be “Dear John,” a song from Swift’s 2010 album Speak Now.
In it, Swift sings about a relationship with an older man. It isn’t much of a jump to assume the song is about Mayer, especially considering the title.
“Dear John, I see it all now, it was wrong / Don’t you think nineteen’s too young / To be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so? / I should’ve known,” she sings.
Mayer, who was 32 when he dated the 19-year-old Swift, said he found the song humiliating and unfair.
