Charli and Dixie D’Amelio are two sisters who rose to fame on TikTok. They are two of the most followed people on the platform. However, the pair believes their experiences with TikTok is now different compared to how it was when they first started. Charli’s TikTok fame came before Dixie’s did. The former joined TikTok in 2019 and started posting dance videos. Being a trained dancer, this was a natural move for her, and her videos soon went viral in the fall of that year.

Charli climbed her way to the top of the platform in several months. By the spring of 2020, she had become the most followed person on TikTok.

Meanwhile, Charli’s popularity also brought attention to her older sister Dixie. The latter is now the ninth most followed person on the app.

Charli and Dixie have also expanded their work beyond TikTok. They have YouTube channels, a podcasts, and advertising deals with many well-known companies.

Charli has talked about TikTok not being fun for her anymore

While TikTok has given Charli and Dixie an enviable career, there are still some downsides to it. They have talked often about trolls and negative comments. Back in March 2021, Charli shared on the sisters’ podcast, 2 Chix, that the amount of negativity she receives is making the app less fun for her.

“It’s extremely difficult to continue posting a platform where people that are watching your videos don’t actually, like, want to see you and a lot of the feed back is negative,” she said. “It’s very hard to do that. And I just kind of lost the passion for it because it used to be really fun for me.”

Nonetheless, Charli added that she would still post on TikTok, especially videos that she enjoys making. However, she explained it’s difficult to post content when “everyone is ready to jump in and criticize the second something is taken the wrong way or words are mixed up.”

Recently, Charli and Dixie also touched on another aspect of TikTok that they no longer like—the fellow influencers. According to the sisters, the environment on the app is now more competitive than before, which makes it less enjoyable.

“It doesn’t feel like it used to, where there was collaborations and fun, and everyone was friends,” Charli said on Dixie’s Early Late Night Show. “Now it’s like… everyone’s trying to beat each other. That doesn’t make sense to me, and it’s not what I started TikTok [for].”

She also added that nowadays it seems people just “wanna collab when it’s convenient for them.”

Dixie agreed with her sister and pointed out another part of the problem: “I think the fact that you’re the biggest on the app… and when they realize you wanted a real friendship—and not just collab—and they couldn’t use you, that’s when they stopped [hanging out with you].”

Additionally, Dixie admitted she now finds it hard to trust other people on TikTok. “I feel like family’s the only way you can go,” she said.
